What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wildlife Park for its spacious free-roaming big cat enclosures and the unique opportunity to see native high-altitude animals like Pallas's cats. However, concerns are frequently raised about the small, cramped, and sometimes dirty conditions of enclosures for smaller animals, leading to mixed feelings about overall animal welfare.
"This zoo is super large and had some impressive exhibits. Namely, the lions, tigers, bears, and wolves. Visitors get to walk above and look down at their free roaming enclosure. It looked like they had a lot of space out there. Which was such a stark contrast from some of the other enclosures… I remember the monkeys, red pandas, and birds were living in prison cells!! 😭 it looked dirty and cramped, kind of a sad sight 😢 i hope they are well taken care of. On a side note, I got to see some animals I’ve never seen in any other zoo before. I got to see the adorable Palla’s cats that are home to Xining and the general area of high altitude and cold. There were also snow leopards and other big cats!
This zoo is one large loop with a significant uphill. I enjoyed the scenery and the walk, but it could be more difficult for some, especially at higher altitude.
Last note, the panda area is the only place with an actual “gift shop”. The gift shops marked on the zoo’s map are more like rest areas with snacks and some miscellaneous toys. Unfortunately, not many zoo themed items."

"Full of wild animals in this high altitude city, Xining. Sky bridge is pretty cool layout for tourism to walk by the beast area. You can play with alpaca and feed giraffe. And it's just a regular zoo, not anything quite impressived. But still a well place to hangout."

"I went to see snow leopard. They was sleeping in a small cages. Many people visit here and the entrance fee is not cheap. I hope they provide bigger space for animals."

Navigating the Terrain and Altitude
Pacing yourself is key to enjoying the park without succumbing to altitude sickness. Consider bringing snacks and water, as while there are rest areas, the food options are limited. The scenic views along the walk can be a pleasant distraction, but the physical exertion should not be underestimated. For those concerned about the climb, planning to visit during cooler parts of the day or taking frequent breaks is advisable.
Animal Welfare Concerns
This disparity in living conditions is a significant point for potential visitors to consider. While the park offers the chance to see unique high-altitude species and enjoy impressive big cat exhibits, it's important to be aware that not all animals may be housed in ideal conditions. Visitors hoping for a consistently positive experience regarding animal welfare might find certain parts of the park disappointing. It's a good reminder to research specific exhibits or be prepared for a range of enclosure sizes and conditions.
Unique Wildlife Encounters
Beyond the Pallas's cat, the park also features other impressive animals. The aforementioned snow leopards are a significant attraction, though their enclosure size is a point of contention for some. The free-roaming big cat enclosures offer a more naturalistic viewing experience for lions, tigers, and wolves. For those seeking interactive experiences, the park offers opportunities to feed giraffes and play with alpacas, adding a hands-on element to the visit that appeals to families and animal lovers alike.
