Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the historical significance of Qianling Mausoleum, particularly the opportunity to explore the excavated satellite tombs with their remarkable murals. The Shaanxi Qianling Museum further enhances the experience with its collection of Tang Dynasty artifacts. While the main tomb is not accessible, the overall historical immersion is highly rewarding.

"Most people don’t seem aware - the mausoleum complex has more than just
wu zetian and emperor gaozong’s mounds- there are also 3 excavated tombs (underground palaces) for their son/ grandchildren princess yongtai, Prince yide and crown Prince Zhanghuai. Visiting these tombs (and the exhibition of artifacts) provides a whole new fascinating perspective on historical Tang. Many of the original tomb murals moved to Shaanxi Museum but quite a few originals are still in place and even the replicas are excellent just like the originals. A must visit for anyone keen on exploration with a sense of adventure!"

"On a crisp morning filled with the promise of adventure, I, along with two friends from Yemen and a Chinese family, set out to explore the Shaanxi Qianling Museum, perched on the serene expanse of Qianling Mountain in Xi'an, China. Our expedition kicked off at the golden hour of 11 a.m., under a clear sky that enveloped us in a blanket of fresh, invigorating air.

Our day began with a delightful culinary venture at a local restaurant near the mountain’s base. The restaurant, a cozy establishment, offered a taste of Xi'an’s rich flavors, serving traditional dishes that were as comforting as they were flavorful. This hearty meal provided the perfect preamble to our climb, fueling our bodies and spirits for the ascent ahead.

With satisfied appetites, we commenced our journey to the museum. The path to the Shaanxi Qianling Museum was as enchanting as it was enlightening, with each step on the mountain trail offering splendid views of the lush landscape that makes Qianling a jewel of Shaanxi Province. The ascent was leisurely; we took our time, savoring the fresh air and the peace that only nature can bestow. Our cameras were constant companions, capturing the breathtaking scenery and the spontaneous moments of joy amongst friends and family.

Upon reaching the Shaanxi Qianling Museum, we were greeted by an architectural marvel. The museum, dedicated to the Tang Dynasty, stands as a custodian of history, housing an impressive collection of artifacts that narrate the richness of China’s imperial past. The exhibition rooms were well-laid out, each segment of the museum offering a deeper insight into the lives of Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian, as well as the myriad aspects of the era they influenced.

The artifacts, from exquisite pottery to intricate gold items and ancient inscriptions, were displayed with care and respect, each piece telling its own story of a bygone era. The museum not only showcased these relics but also beautifully contextualized them within the larger tapestry of Chinese history through detailed descriptions and thoughtful presentations.

The highlight for many visitors, including us, was the section of the museum dedicated to the Silk Road. This exhibit detailed the cultural exchanges between the East and the West, illustrating how the Silk Road was a pivotal artery of commerce and interaction. It was fascinating to see tangible traces of the interactions that shaped the course of history, from delicate glassware and vibrant textiles to the more austere but equally impressive Buddhist artifacts.

After thoroughly exploring the museum, we began our descent. The way down provided a time for reflection on the incredible history we had witnessed, set against the natural beauty of Qianling Mountain. The setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, a perfect curtain call to an enriching day.

The Shaanxi Qianling Museum is more than just a collection of artifacts; it is a gateway to the Tang Dynasty, offering a unique glimpse into the historical and cultural milieu that shaped this fascinating period. For anyone visiting Xi'an, a trip to this museum is not just recommended; it is essential for understanding the profound legacy of one of China’s most remarkable dynasties. Our visit was not only educational but also incredibly enjoyable, filled with the laughter of friends, the shared wonder of discovery, and the unparalleled beauty of Qianling Mountain. This experience was a vivid page in our travel diaries, rich with history, culture, and the bonding joys of exploration."
