Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Wutun Monastery for its immense historical and religious significance, highlighting the impressive yak butter sculptures and the vast architectural complex. The opportunity to witness monk assemblies adds to the profound experience. However, strict photography rules and the potential for strong incense fumes are noted drawbacks.

"It's a sacred temple where I learnt about 藏传佛教。no photos are allowed inside the temple to show respect. Can see alot of monk and believers inside praying. Tour guide suggests not to take photo with the Buddhist pagoda, because inside the pagoda has many Buddhist scriptures so somehow have some power or effect. So just take the photo of the pagoda will do without having any selfie or wefie there."

"This monastery is around 30 mins from
Xining city . After you enter the main gates , you have to change to a buggy to get you up to the chapel. Tsongkhapa founder of the Gelug sect of Buddhism was from according to history .

This monastery is famous for their Yak butter sculptures , this is a skill which could be lost. Only a handful of old monks at temple knows the skill . What I heard, they have to soak their hands in freezing cold water so they can sculpt the Buddha and flowers , pretty amazing!"

"Kumbum Monastery, one of the six greatest Tibetan Gelug Monasteries with three arts. It was a large complex 30km from down town. Large historic Tibetan Monastery. We took a Didi from Xining. Buy ticket on site then scan QR at gate to enter. You’ll always need passport or ID card. Lots of guides ($). We chose to self tour. Rainy morning but cleared."
