What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Flaming Mountains visually striking and culturally significant due to their connection with 'Journey to the West'. The extreme heat is a major factor, with many advising preparation and strategic timing. While some find the tourist attractions commercialized, others appreciate the unique landscape and the chance to connect with legend.
"The Flaming Mountain is make famous by a Novel “Journey to the West” legend written by writer Wu Cheng’en during Ming Dynasty. In the novel, one of the three apprentices Monkey King stirred up trouble in the Heaven Palace and kicked over one furnace used for making immortality pills making charcoals fell off the sky scattering around the Turpan Basin where the Flaming Hill now situated.
There is a giant thermometer also look like the Monkey King’s Ruyi Jingu Bang which reads 48 degree C , can be found in this site, attracting a number of tourists from around the world.
Infact the mountains are impressive to see as it is quite unusual. All barren and brownish red. My friend told me if its on a sunny day, one could see the glory of the all-red mountain.
The scene in this area is just like a desert, no vegetation, only sandstone. Few bronze statues from Journey to the West, such as Iron Fan Princess, Bull Demon King & Monkey King attracted many tourists, crowding & touching them to pose for photographs. When the place is crowded , it is very hard to shoot a decent picture.
In my observation , there are several tourist attractions such as camel rides, donkey ride & 4 wheels motorcycle . Imagine riding under the heat !!!!
Detailed explanations of the history of Flaming Mountain, its geology as well as the legend with all the characters such as Monkey King, Pig and Monk are displayed in its museum.
Last but not least, I supposed the only interesting thing found here is the world largest thermometer which looks like the Monkey King’s weapon – Ruyi Jingu Bang. !!!!"

"Ask the locals, they are crazy about this place because a TV show about a legendary story of “Journey to the West” was shot here. Many Chinese from all over come here to visit this place, extremely touristy though- and there are airplane rides, camel rides, ATV rides and so on. You’d probably spend an hour or two here, and that’ll be enough."

"As the name, Flaming Mountain, suggests, this tourist destination is terribly hot. It is the location for the fable, 'Journey to the West'. The air is very dry and very hot. Tourists are advised not to stay out in the sun for a long stretch of time. Once again, tourists need to be prepared for this heat - suntan lotion, cap, umbrella, and drink a lot of water."
