Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Jiangnan Examination Hall for its historical significance and serene atmosphere, especially in the evening. While the old wing offers a glimpse into traditional exam life, the more extensive new wing provides a deeper understanding of the examination system's history. Some note limited English signage, but the overall experience is considered a worthwhile cultural immersion.

"中国科举博物馆. There are actually two wings to it - an old and new, located opposite each other. Before coming, all of the videos I saw about this place were only on the old side, so I was surprised with the new wing. Pleasantly surprised. The new wing is actually more interesting and much more extensive, going down to Level B4. More space to move around the exhibits, cooler (aircon indoors) and everything looks nicer in general.

Having said so, the old wing also has some pretty interesting stuff, such as the cubicles the candidates sat in, displays of food that the candidates would eat for good luck. Did you know that the entire exam takes 9 days and starts as early as 3am from attendance taking. The old wing focuses more on 文举 while the new wing covers history of 武举 too. 科举 also set the standards which other countries adopted/adapted to find talents to serve in the government.

I do wish I had more energy to walk thru the new wing in greater detail."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Imperial Examination System: A Foundation of Chinese Governance

The Jiangnan Examination Hall was once the epicenter of China's imperial examination system, a meritocratic process that allowed individuals from various social strata to enter government service. This system, which lasted for over 1,300 years, was instrumental in maintaining social stability and ensuring a competent bureaucracy. It's considered one of China's most significant inventions, influencing talent selection in other countries as well. Instagram

The examinations were notoriously rigorous, often lasting for nine days and requiring candidates to demonstrate mastery in classical literature, philosophy, and governance. The Jiangnan Examination Hall was the largest and most prestigious of these centers, with officials selected here often rising to the highest ranks of power during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Instagram

Visiting the Jiangnan Examination Hall offers a tangible connection to this profound historical institution. You can witness the cramped cubicles where candidates endured immense pressure and learn about the strategies and lucky charms they employed to succeed. The museum's exhibits, particularly in the newer wing, provide a comprehensive overview of both the civil and military examination tracks, highlighting their enduring impact on Chinese society. Reddit

Experiencing the Dual Nature: Old vs. New Wings

The Jiangnan Examination Hall complex is thoughtfully divided into two distinct sections: the traditional Old Wing and the modern New Wing. The Old Wing immerses visitors in the historical atmosphere, showcasing the actual exam cubicles where scholars spent days in isolation. You can also see displays of food items that candidates would eat for good luck, offering a glimpse into the human side of this intense academic challenge. Reddit

The New Wing, however, provides a more extensive and contemporary museum experience. It delves deeper into the history of the examination system, including the less-discussed military examinations, and features more spacious exhibit areas with modern presentation techniques. Many visitors find the New Wing to be more engaging and informative, offering a broader perspective on the system's evolution and influence. Reddit

While the Old Wing offers a direct, visceral connection to the past, the New Wing provides the context and breadth of information that truly illuminates the significance of the imperial examinations. Experiencing both allows for a comprehensive understanding of this pivotal aspect of Chinese history and culture. Reddit

Photography Opportunities: Capturing History and Ambiance

The Jiangnan Examination Hall is a photographer's delight, offering a blend of historical architecture and serene natural elements. The reflecting pool is a standout feature, providing stunning symmetrical shots, especially when the surrounding buildings are mirrored in the calm water. This area is particularly captivating during the evening when the lights illuminate the scene, creating a magical ambiance. Instagram

Beyond the water features, the Mingyuan Tower presents an excellent opportunity for panoramic city views, allowing you to capture Nanjing's historical landscape. Within the Old Wing, the exam cubicles themselves offer unique, intimate shots that convey the intensity of the historical examinations. The traditional Chinese architecture throughout the complex, as highlighted in various reels, provides a rich backdrop for any photograph. Instagram+1

For the best results, consider visiting during the late afternoon to capture the transition from daylight to evening. While most areas permit photography, be mindful of any signage regarding flash usage, especially within enclosed exhibition spaces. Instagram
