What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Moon River Town is a visually stunning, man-made water village that truly shines at night with its magical illuminations and fountain shows. While some find it overly commercialized and expensive, its picturesque architecture and the adjacent Simatai Great Wall offer a unique experience, especially for those who stay overnight to avoid day-trip crowds.
"Gubei Water Town is a ghost town. Don't waste your time and money coming here unless all you want to do is to hike up the Simatai Great Wall. There were free performances throughout the day at different locations in the water town but they were mostly a disappointment, with the drone show being the exception. It's not spectacular but it's good enough to end a boring day trip to Gubei Water Town. The boat ride is a rip off. Think twice before choosing. The town itself is small and you have plenty of time to spare to explore a town with an unusual number of vacant buildings... The atmosphere feels like a perfect spot for Halloween."

"Please note that Google Maps does not work in China. The city of Beijing Watertown or Gubai is a small town at the foot of a section of the Great Wall of China. Through the village there is a river on which several boats go. In the streets there are several shops and hotels, some of which can also be booked by foreigners. The place also has some exhibitions and performances. There is a lot to experience and relax."

"Gubei Watertown is honestly super pretty kind of like stepping into a historical drama set. The old style architecture, lanterns at night, and water reflections are all really photogenic. It’s clean, peaceful, and there’s a nice vibe if you’re into slower, scenic travel.
BUT… it’s also quite commercial. A lot of the “traditional” parts are clearly rebuilt for tourists. Tons of souvenir shops, cafés, and ticketed activities. Still charming, but don’t expect a deeply authentic ancient town experience.
Also, it’s huge. Be ready to walk a lot. Best to stay overnight so you can enjoy the lights and the quiet when the day trippers leave."
