What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Longmen Grottoes as a must-see UNESCO World Heritage site, marveling at the immense scale and historical significance of the Buddhist sculptures. The artistry and preservation of the Tang Dynasty era carvings are particularly highlighted. However, many note that the site can be overwhelmingly crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, which can detract from the experience.
"Must visit UNESCO heritage site if you're around Xi'an and nearby city.
Considered as a very well preserved heritage side back to Tang Dynasty. You can still read the ancient Chinese character at the cave wall.
It can be a packed with tourist during weekend /holiday season. But still, worth a visit if you're a history nerd like me 🙈
Tips:
1. Wear sport shoes
2. Go as early as 7am to capture nice photo of the main buddha statue
3. Go to the less crowded area, the opposite side of river to take a nice panorama shot"

"This is an iconic site, of major importance as an illustration of Buddhist influence on the Silk Road. With 2,345 caves and tens of thousands of sculptures, it deserves its UNESCO listing and all the attention that comes with that. So expect crowds . . . loud, pushy, rude crowds. Combine that with lots of stairs and small electric shuttles and you have a recipe for disappointment and chaos. I still rate the Grottoes 4-star and I would have visited them anyhow. Just be warned it can be very unpleasant at times."

"Amazing place full of history, make sure to set out just before sunset to get the full feel of the place with daylight and lit up at night…
Be aware that the largest buddha attracts some insane amounts of crowds, so be prepared to become a sardine for a few moments…
It’s quite a walk, and make sure you grab tickets for the minibus, it will save your legs, but be aware you seem to pay for each way, so have to queue up twice, unless you can figure out how to buy a return ticket."
