Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Drum and Bell Towers as striking historical landmarks offering incredible views and captivating live drumming performances. The surrounding Gulou area is a vibrant hub for culture, food, and nightlife, with many live houses providing an energetic atmosphere. While the stairs can be challenging, the overall experience is highly recommended for its blend of history and modern entertainment.

"One of my favorite place to hang out and take those who is in Beijing for the first time.
The Bell Tower and the Drum Tower are essential in ancient Chinese cities, for the bell indicates time and the drum indicates important events to the whole city. Being a capital for more than 600 years since Ming Dynasty, the two towers in Beijing stand out among all the similar towers in China.
The east to the Drum Tower is GuLou Dong Street, which further leads to Nanluoguxiang and Beiluoguxiang, the former a very commercialized old street and the latter very cozy hutong style alley with many nice cafes. Best to visit the two alleys in late October and enjoy the golden yellow of Ginkgo leaves.
South to Drum Tower is a traditional imperial pastry shop called 富华斋 FuHuaZhai. Have a tea and some freshly heated pastries and maybe a little dessert when you get tired climbing the stairs in the two towers. Personally I recommend you to have a cup of jasmine tea 茉莉花茶, hawthorn and osmanthus pastry 桂花山楂, rose and bean pastry 玫瑰豆蓉 and a Guozigan (iced jammy apricot and hawthorn) 果子干. 孙尼额芬白糕 the white cake is also nice to try and is famous for being a favorite of an imperial lady in Qing Dynasty.
To the west of the towers are ShiChaHai and Houhai where many bars are located, the the to the east is Gongwangfu, the Mansion of Heshen, a hugely wealthy official in Qing Dynasty."

"Both monuments are one of my favorites of this trip.

Standing tall and looking so great 👍 just be careful of the stairs, quite high and do a take rest if needed, you need time to climb up. Don't rush.

I enjoyed seeing peoples in the community having lots of activities outside in the morning such as doing TikTok live, playing games, chit chatting etc. So fun and peaceful."

"The Drum Tower and Bell Tower of Beijing are striking historical landmarks that stand as reminders of the city’s ancient past. Originally built during the Jin or Yuan dynasty, these twin towers once served as the official timekeepers of the capital, long before mechanical clocks.

Climbing up the Drum Tower rewards you with a commanding view of the old hutong neighborhoods and modern skyline beyond—a fascinating contrast of past and present. Inside, you can see massive drums and even catch a live drumming performance, which brings the history of the place to life. The Bell Tower, standing just opposite, houses a giant bronze bell that was once used to mark the hours."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Historical Significance of the Drum and Bell Towers

The Drum Tower and Bell Tower in Beijing are not just historical landmarks; they were the city's official timekeepers for centuries. Originally built during the Jin or Yuan dynasty and reconstructed in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty, these towers played a crucial role in the daily life of the capital. The Drum Tower housed massive drums that were beaten to mark the hours, while the Bell Tower contained a giant bronze bell that tolled to signal the time. Their presence underscored the structured rhythm of imperial Beijing.

Visiting these towers offers a tangible connection to this past. Climbing the Drum Tower, you can still see the impressive replica drums and, importantly, witness live drumming performances that echo the historical function of the tower. The ascent itself, though a bit tiring with its many high steps, rewards visitors with a commanding view. This perspective allows you to appreciate the urban planning of ancient Beijing, seeing how the towers commanded the city's layout and how the surrounding hutongs spread out below.

The towers also serve as a gateway to exploring the rich cultural tapestry of the Gulou area. To the east lie the famous Nanluoguxiang and Beiluoguxiang hutongs, offering a glimpse into traditional Beijing life, complete with charming cafes and shops. To the west, the scenic Shichahai and Houhai lakes beckon with their waterside bars and vibrant nightlife, including the very live houses that now occupy the spirit of communal gathering that the towers once represented. Reddit

Experiencing Beijing's Live House Scene

The Gulou area has evolved into a hub for Beijing's contemporary music scene, with numerous live houses offering a dynamic nightlife experience. These venues provide a platform for both local and touring artists, showcasing a diverse range of musical genres from rock and pop to indie and electronic music. Unlike large concert halls, live houses offer a more intimate setting, allowing audiences to connect closely with the performers and soak in the energetic atmosphere.

Many of these live houses are not just about the music; they also serve as social gathering spots. Visitors often describe a friendly and welcoming environment, where they can enjoy drinks and mingle with locals and fellow travelers. Some venues are noted for their unique decor and ambiance, contributing to the overall experience. The presence of live music every night in some establishments makes the Gulou area a consistent draw for those seeking entertainment after dark. TikTok+2

When planning a visit to a live house, it's advisable to check their schedules in advance, as specific bands or events might require separate ticketing. Some TikTok videos highlight the value for money, mentioning complimentary snacks or drinks with ticket purchases, which can be a great bonus. Remember that while Google Maps doesn't work in China, local navigation apps will be essential for finding your way to these often tucked-away venues within the labyrinthine hutongs. TikTokReddit
