What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Zhenguo Temple is praised for its well-preserved ancient architecture and unique sculptures, particularly from the Five Dynasties period. However, visitors note that the temple is quite small, with many spending only about 10 minutes there. The main drawback highlighted is the difficulty and potential cost of reaching the temple from Pingyao Ancient City, with some cautioning about ticketing practices.
"Almost got scammed by the ticketing counter who blatantly told his colleague to be quiet about it . Thankfully i understand mandarin and realised before any payment that they were trying to charge me for an additional ticket . Otherwise the temple is a very medicore and would spend no more than 10 minutes"

"When visiting Pingyao Ancient City, be sure to check out the nearby Zhenguo Temple and Shuanglin Temple. Personally, I think the ancient architecture of Zhenguo Temple is more unique.
The Northern Han Dynasty, one of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms periods, was founded by Liu Chong (Min), a Shatuo Turk, after he declared himself emperor in Longdu (present-day Taiyuan). It was destroyed by Emperor Gaozong of Song, Zhao Guangyi, in 979, finally bringing China back to unity.
Zhenguo Temple was built in the seventh year of the Tianhui era of the Northern Han Dynasty (963 AD). The temple fell into disrepair during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, but the Wanfo Hall was rebuilt in the twentieth year of the Jiaqing era (1815 AD) according to its original design.
At the very front of the temple is the Tianwang Hall, which houses four statues of Heavenly Kings, majestic in appearance and full of life. The roof is a single-eaved gable style, dating back to the Yuan Dynasty.
The Wanfo Hall is located in the center of the front courtyard. The hall boasts a unique design, nearly square in plan, with a single-eaved hip roof that extends far outwards. The massive seven-tiered bracket system, exceeding two-thirds the height of the columns, gives the roof an umbrella-like shape, a rarity among temple architecture throughout history. The most precious aspect of the hall is its sculptures. At the center of the altar sits a waisted Sumeru pedestal upon which Shakyamuni Buddha sits cross-legged. The hall contains a total of fourteen sculptures. Of these, three (Guanyin, Sudhana, and the Dragon Girl) were sculpted in the Ming Dynasty and repainted in the Qing Dynasty; the rest are original works from the Five Dynasties period."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When visiting, prioritize ease of access. Given the potential difficulties with public transport, consider hiring a taxi or arranging a local ride to minimize travel stress. The temple's compact size means you can cover it efficiently, leaving more time for other family-friendly activities in the Pingyao area.

The Architectural Marvel of Wanfo Hall
Beyond its structural innovation, the Wanfo Hall houses some of the most precious artistic treasures within Zhenguo Temple. The altar features a seated Shakyamuni Buddha, surrounded by a total of fourteen sculptures. Of these, three were created in the Ming Dynasty and later repainted in the Qing Dynasty. However, the remaining eleven sculptures are original works dating back to the Five Dynasties period (907-960 AD), the same era the temple was founded. These original pieces are incredibly rare and offer a direct glimpse into the artistic styles and religious iconography of that historical period.
Visitors often remark on the preservation of these ancient artworks. While the temple itself saw repairs and rebuilding in later dynasties, the core artistic elements from the Five Dynasties remain remarkably intact. This makes Zhenguo Temple a vital site for understanding the evolution of Buddhist art and architecture in China, often overlooked in favor of more famous counterparts.
A Journey Through Dynasties: Art and History
Later dynasties left their mark on Zhenguo Temple as well. The Hall of Heavenly Kings showcases statues of the Four Heavenly Kings, which are attributed to the Yuan Dynasty. These figures are described as majestic and full of life, demonstrating the artistic continuity and evolution within the temple complex. Furthermore, the temple houses sculptures from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, including repainted works and new additions, providing a layered artistic narrative.
While the temple experienced periods of disrepair, notably during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Wanfo Hall was meticulously rebuilt in 1815 according to its original design. This dedication to preserving the temple's historical and artistic integrity is evident today. Zhenguo Temple is often cited as being better preserved than other nearby temples, making it a crucial site for scholars and enthusiasts of Chinese religious architecture and art.
