Reviews Summary

Mianshan Scenic Area is lauded for its stunning natural beauty, particularly its dramatic cliffs and unique cliffside architecture. Visitors are captivated by the historical legends, especially that of Jie Zichu, and the solemnity of the Dengsinbul. While the scale is impressive, some find the on-site accommodation basic and pricey, and public transport can be a bit unpredictable.

"A very large and very beautiful scenic area accessible from Pingyao! We went there by public transport.

Take a train to Jiexiu, and walk about 300 meters to the left on the main street (with the main station in your back). You'll see, a little hidden, a bus station behind the stores in a side street. From there you can take bus number 302, which is dedicated to the mianshan entrance. However, timetable wasn't clear and we got a taxi eventually going there for 50 yuan. The bus is 5 yuan. We got the bus on the way back at 16:00.

The area is beautiful and big, the shuttle buses are nice but some distances between the areas are very walkable. We saw about 2/3 of the park in a day, not visiting every site and temple but seeing a lot!"

"Mianshan is 2,072m high and is located in the peak of Shaanxi Province. It is a place where you can feel the spirit of loyalty and filial piety of Jie Zichu. You can see the dangerous cliffs and beautiful mountains. Jie Zichu was the most loyal subject of Duke Wen of Jin (636-628 BC) when he was in exile during the Spring and Autumn Period. According to legend, when Duke Wen of Jin was starving, he cut off flesh from his own thigh to feed his ruler (Duke Wen of Jin). Later, when Duke Wen of Jin ascended the throne and rewarded his subjects, he forgot Jie Zichu. Duke Wen of Jin realized his mistake and came to Mianshan to look for Jie Zichu, but when Jie Zichu refused to come out, Duke Wen of Jin tried to set fire to Mianshan to make him come out, but Jie Zichu and his mother were burned to death. Duke Wen of Jin deeply regretted this and created the Hansik Festival, a day to commemorate this by not lighting a fire and eating cold rice."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legend of Jie Zichu and Hansik

Mianshan Scenic Area is deeply intertwined with the ancient legend of Jie Zichu, a loyal minister during the Spring and Autumn Period. According to historical accounts and local lore, Jie Zichu was so devoted to his ruler, Duke Wen of Jin, that he famously cut flesh from his own thigh to feed the starving Duke when they were in exile. This act of extreme loyalty is a cornerstone of Mianshan's cultural significance. Reddit

Later, when Duke Wen ascended the throne, he forgot Jie Zichu. Upon realizing his oversight, the Duke sought out Jie Zichu, who had retreated to Mianshan. When Jie Zichu refused to emerge, Duke Wen, in a desperate attempt to force him out, ordered the mountain to be set ablaze. Tragically, Jie Zichu and his mother perished in the fire. This event is the origin of the 'Hansik' festival, a traditional holiday where people commemorate Jie Zichu by abstaining from cooking with fire and eating only cold food. Reddit

This profound story of loyalty and sacrifice imbues Mianshan with a unique spiritual atmosphere. The rebuilt structures, while modern, stand as testaments to the enduring power of this legend, drawing visitors who seek to connect with this ancient tale of devotion and regret. The very landscape of Mianshan seems to echo the solemnity of this historical narrative.

Architectural Marvels on Dangerous Cliffs

One of the most striking aspects of Mianshan Scenic Area is its architecture, particularly the shrines and temples built directly into and upon sheer, dangerous cliffs. These structures, many of which have been rebuilt since the year 2000, are astonishing feats of engineering and human perseverance. Visitors often express wonder at how these buildings were constructed in such precarious locations, seemingly defying gravity. Reddit

The integration of human-made structures with the natural landscape is breathtaking. Pathways wind along cliff edges, leading to hidden temples and pavilions that offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The sheer scale of the cliffs themselves is a major draw, providing a dramatic backdrop for the architectural achievements. Reddit

Exploring these cliffside marvels requires a sense of adventure and a good pair of walking shoes. The shuttle bus system helps navigate the larger distances, but much of the charm lies in discovering these hidden gems on foot. The experience of standing on a platform carved into a cliff face, looking out at the vast expanse, is truly unforgettable and a highlight for many visitors. Reddit

The Unique Dengsinbul

Within Mianshan Scenic Area lies a particularly unique and solemn attraction: the Dengsinbul, which translates to 'mummified monks.' These are not statues in the traditional sense, but rather the preserved bodies of revered monks who have entered nirvana. This practice, while uncommon, is a significant aspect of Buddhist tradition in some regions, representing a state of spiritual attainment. Reddit

Witnessing the Dengsinbul is often described as a profound and contemplative experience. The preserved figures are displayed in a manner that reflects their spiritual status, offering visitors a rare glimpse into a specific aspect of Buddhist funerary practices and beliefs. It's a testament to the deep spiritual history embedded within Mianshan. Reddit

While not as widely publicized as the cliffside architecture, the Dengsinbul is a significant cultural and religious element of Mianshan. It adds another layer of depth to the visitor's understanding of the area's spiritual heritage, making it a noteworthy stop for those interested in religious history and practices. Reddit
