Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Huangshan's breathtaking natural beauty, especially the iconic 'seas of clouds' and unique rock formations. The challenging hikes offer rewarding views, though many find the extensive stairs tiring. Some reviewers note the high cost of food and potential for large crowds during peak times.

"Such a beautiful place! I went there in mid-November, the weather was cool and refreshing, and the atmosphere was amazing. There are so many lovely photo spots — every corner looks picture-perfect!"

Thanet Netpinyo

"Impressive view , spending some hours to get around , my legs did not follow me any more =]]
Well prepared before hiking, there are many stairs.
There is a few stations which we can refill water , staying at hotel on moutain is also a good choice"

Trần Linh Đa

"I went to Huangshan on a cloudy day, and what I saw was completely different from the photos on Google Reviews. Beyond the path beneath my feet, everything more than 5–10 km away was hidden in the clouds — just a vast white mist. With the cold wind blowing, I honestly felt like a wandering monk on a pilgrimage.

It’s interesting that there’s really only one main trail connecting north and south, but it goes up and down constantly — extremely tiring. The uphill sections are steep, and on the way down, the wind hits from behind, making it easy to slip. I’d actually recommend not wearing those plastic shoe covers that the shops sell — they make it even more slippery. Also, try not to wear brand new shoes because of the mud.

I don’t know where my confidence came from — I thought sticking heat patches all over my body and wearing a skirt would be enough to conquer Huangshan. Later, I realized I was probably the biggest fool on the mountain. My fingers turned purple from the cold; my body felt warm, but my hands and feet were freezing. The wind was strong, and the tour groups heading from south to north were packed (the stairs are separated by metal ropes into two directions). We went from north to south, so at least it was less crowded — we could walk much faster.

There are food stalls near Guangmingding, and surprisingly, the grilled sausages (¥100) there tasted absolutely divine — the best thing ever after all that hiking. I did feel sorry for the cleaners, though, as there was rubbish everywhere near the stalls, not even in bins but scattered on the ground.

We passed the only toilet in that area — it’s quite large — and many aunties were using the hand dryers for warmth. They kindly shared the warm air with me when they saw my fingers had turned purple.

After finishing the trail, we reached the cable car station. The Chinese tour group in our cabin was talking very loudly in such a small space that my Apple Watch even sent a noise alert. My ears were ringing, and although I politely asked them to lower their voices, they acknowledged me but didn’t actually get quieter — probably just their normal way of speaking.

All in all, the nature was breathtaking, even if I didn’t get the picture-perfect views."

Navigating Huangshan's Trails

Huangshan is renowned for its intricate network of trails, characterized by countless stairs and steep ascents. The primary routes connect major peaks and viewpoints, but the constant up-and-down can be physically taxing. Many visitors opt to use the cable cars to bypass the most strenuous sections, saving energy for exploring the summit areas. It's crucial to wear well-broken-in hiking shoes, as new ones can cause blisters, and avoid slippery shoe covers sold at the mountain. Reddit

Key trails include the route from the North Gate (Yungu Temple) to the West Sea Grand Canyon, and the path from the South Gate (Tangkou) to the Jade Screen Pavilion. The West Sea Grand Canyon is particularly dramatic, offering stunning views but also challenging climbs. Be prepared for varying weather conditions; a waterproof jacket is advisable even in milder seasons. Staying on marked paths is essential for safety and to protect the delicate mountain environment. Reddit

For those seeking a less crowded experience, traveling from north to south can sometimes be less congested than the reverse direction, as many tour groups move from south to north. Regardless of your chosen path, remember to pace yourself, stay hydrated, and enjoy the incredible natural beauty surrounding you. Reddit

Experiencing the 'Seas of Clouds'

The 'seas of clouds' are perhaps Huangshan's most iconic natural spectacle, transforming the mountain into an otherworldly landscape. This phenomenon occurs when cloud layers fill the valleys and surround the peaks, creating an illusion of floating islands. The best chances to witness this breathtaking sight are typically in the early morning or late afternoon, especially after periods of rain or during cooler seasons. Instagram

Several viewpoints offer prime opportunities to capture the 'seas of clouds'. Guangmingding (Bright Summit) is a popular spot, providing panoramic views. Other excellent locations include the area around the Lotus Peak and the Celestial Capital Peak. Patience is key; the clouds can appear and disappear quickly, so be ready with your camera. Instagram

While the 'seas of clouds' are a highlight, remember that they are a natural occurrence and not guaranteed. Even on cloudy days, Huangshan offers a unique, mystical atmosphere, with mist and fog creating a different kind of serene beauty. Embrace whatever the mountain offers; each experience is memorable. Reddit

Practicalities: Food, Water, and Accommodation

While hiking Huangshan, staying fueled and hydrated is essential. There are numerous food stalls and restaurants scattered across the mountain, particularly near major attractions and cable car stations. These offer a range of options, from local dishes to snacks. However, be prepared for higher prices due to the logistical challenges of transporting goods up the mountain. Bringing your own snacks and water is a cost-effective strategy. Reddit

Water refill stations are available at various points, so carrying a reusable water bottle is highly recommended. For those wishing to extend their stay and witness sunrise or sunset without the rush of descending, hotels are available on the mountain. These accommodations offer convenience but come at a premium price and require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. Reddit

If you choose to stay in Huangshan city, Tunxi Ancient Street offers a charming historical atmosphere and a wider variety of dining options, including local specialties like Huangshan stewed pigeon and bamboo shoots. This can be a pleasant excursion after your mountain adventure. Reddit
