What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Li River cruise is widely praised for its breathtaking karst mountain scenery, often described as a living painting. Many find the experience worthwhile, especially spotting the iconic 20 Yuan banknote view. However, some visitors are disappointed by the crowds and the potential for overcast weather impacting the views.
"This river cruise is a must if you visit Guilin! The Karst Mountains are breathtaking. Bring snacks and water. This company’s boats are comfortable, safe, and well-appointed for a comfortable and scenic cruise. I would do this cruise again.
BTW, the Karat Mountains appear on the obverse side of a 20 Yuan note. The cruise passes the very spot where the picture was taken for the note. Hold up a note and compare to the realtime exposure of the specific mountains. Worth it!"

"You can book the Li river cruise here with different kinds of boat.
I took the 4 star boat with buffet to Yangshuo. Recommend to book the upper deck tickets, it is more calm and has more space, less people, but is a little bit more expensive. In my opinion, the first floor on the boat is too loud and crowded.
The food was ok, in Chinese style.
The sceneries are so beautiful, the ride took about 3 hours.
Recommend checking the tour in advance or booking a tour guide, since the staff does not speak English."

"To the Lijiang River in Guilin will travel, personally feel that only swim into the Yang Di Xingping can, full cost more, the mood is almost. We traveled from Guilin to Yangshuo for four hours, and the boat was comfortable and had a nice meal. No other netizens said it was so bad"

Choosing Your Li River Cruise Experience
For a potentially more serene experience, consider booking an upper deck ticket on a larger boat, which usually provides more space and fewer people, though at a higher cost. Alternatively, some visitors prefer the charm of smaller bamboo rafts, which offer a closer-to-the-water perspective and a more authentic feel, though these are often for shorter durations and may not cover the entire Guilin-Yangshuo stretch. It's crucial to research and book the option that best suits your comfort and budget preferences, keeping in mind that staff may have limited English proficiency.
When planning your cruise, consider the time of day and year. Afternoon cruises can offer beautiful lighting as the sun begins to set, casting a warm glow on the karst peaks. However, be aware that weather can be unpredictable, and rainy days might reduce visibility and the overall visual impact of the landscape. Many travelers also note the iconic view featured on the 20 Yuan banknote, which can be spotted along the route, particularly near Xingping, making it a key photographic opportunity.
Navigating Crowds and Capturing the Best Views
Beyond choosing your deck, timing your visit can also help. While the scenery is impressive year-round, visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) might mean fewer tour groups. If you're aiming for the best photographic opportunities, the late afternoon can provide a magical golden hour light on the karst formations. However, it's essential to be aware of the time of year; year-end visits might mean shorter daylight hours and a higher chance of overcast skies, impacting picture quality.
For those seeking a more intimate experience away from the main ferry lines, exploring shorter routes or opting for smaller bamboo boat tours, particularly around Xingping, can offer a different perspective. Remember to bring your camera and be patient; even amidst crowds, there are numerous moments and vistas that are incredibly photogenic, especially the famous 20 Yuan banknote view.
