"Hualin Temple is located in the northern corner of Fuzhou's Gulou District, on the southern slope of Pingshan Mountain, east of the Fujian Provincial People's Government. In the second year of the Qiande reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (964), during the reign of the Qian family, the king of Wuyue, the Fuzhou prefect built it to pray for peace in the country. It was originally named "Yueshan Jixiang Zen Temple."
Hualin Temple has survived many years, with only the main hall remaining. Later, the mountain gate, left and right side halls, and corridors were added. The main hall features a raised-beam structure with a single-eaved, nine-ridged roof. It stands 15.5 meters high and covers an area of 574 square meters. It has 18 wooden pillars, all supported by brackets, without a single nail. Its construction techniques are unique among Tang and Song wooden structures nationwide and significantly influenced the "Daifusha" and "Tensiha" architectural styles of Japan's Kamakura period (late 12th century). Despite the rainy and humid Fuzhou region, which is plagued by termites and makes wooden structures difficult to preserve, Hualin Temple still retains its original components from over 900 years ago. It is the oldest wooden temple south of the Yangtze River in my country and a valuable resource for the study of ancient Chinese architecture. In 1983, it was designated a second-batch national key cultural relic protection site.
