Visitors praise Shangqing Palace for its spiritual significance as a birthplace of Taoism and its dramatic natural beauty, particularly the sheer cliffs. The climb, though strenuous, is considered rewarding, offering moments of tranquility and breathtaking views, often enhanced by atmospheric mist. Some find the commercial stalls and selfie-takers a minor detraction.
"Beautiful place to visit"

"It's a special place, a hill with sheer cliffs, like a finger pointing into the sky... the climb up many stairs is punctuated by traditional style buildings and temples. The best is saved for the pinnacle where there can be a feeling of spirituality in the birthplace of Taoism. Expect only the occasional view as humidity, cloud and mist envelope the surrounds... but breaks from the stairs are welcomed. It is not necessary to take the (crammed and a little bit worrying) ferry over the lake, there is a walkway.
If you can somehow disregard the determination of some to have their selfie exactly where you are standing, and the tackiness of the stalls and shops during the climb.
The train from Chengdu North was only £5. Book early! £0.40p on the Metro from central Chengdu. And £5 for a taxi at the other end. Set aside a day."

Focus on the journey and the unique cultural experience rather than rushing to the summit.
🚶 Budget Travelers
