Reviews Summary

The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel offers a visually stimulating, albeit brief, journey under the Huangpu River with colorful lights and futuristic effects. While some find it a fun novelty, many consider it an overpriced tourist trap, recommending cheaper alternatives like the metro or ferry for crossing the river.

"In my opinion, this is a tourist trap, doesn't make much sense to take and is incredible expensive compared to anything else in the area.
They say that in the ticket you also get a drink on the other side, but actually you only get a discount for something you still need to pay.
2 stars and not 1 because in the end it's quite a fast way to go on the other side, but not worth it. I expected much better.
I advise to explore the city using local public transport or Taxi, is much cheaper and better."

Matteo

"If i knew it would be that bad we all would have skipped it, it was hyped up alot but for the price you pay it is definitely a big let down, there is alot cheaper places to look at some lights on a wall. Our whole group had nothing great to say on this one. Our carriage was packed so we couldnt see alot. Definitely skip this and see the river and bridge instead."

Sam Brun

"Fancy Lightshow on the way to cross the River from Bond to Pudong. On the other side can you continue the Trip by Metro Line 2. The one way ticket costs 50 RMB."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

For families, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel can be a fun, albeit brief, visual spectacle. The flashing lights and futuristic theme might capture a child's imagination for the short duration of the ride. TikTokInstagram

However, parents should be aware of the cost and manage expectations. If your children are easily impressed by lights and sounds, it could be a worthwhile novelty. For a more practical and budget-friendly river crossing, consider the metro or ferry, which are also accessible and efficient for families. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

If you're traveling on a tight budget, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is likely not the best use of your funds. The 50 RMB one-way fare is considered high for the short, visually-focused experience. InstagramReddit

Savvy budget travelers are strongly advised to opt for the Shanghai Metro (Line 2) or the public ferry. These options offer significantly cheaper ways to cross the Huangpu River and reach Pudong, allowing you to allocate your money to other experiences or attractions. Reddit

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Experience: A Tunnel of Lights

The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is essentially a short, automated ride that takes you under the Huangpu River, connecting the historic Bund area with the modern Pudong district. The journey is characterized by a series of colorful lights, lasers, and sound effects designed to create a futuristic and somewhat psychedelic atmosphere. Think of it as a brief, immersive light show rather than a traditional transport experience. TikTokInstagram

Many visitors describe the ride as 'trippy' and 'hyperspace-like,' with the cabin moving through a tunnel that seems to warp and change colors. While visually stimulating, the actual travel time is very short, often lasting only a few minutes. This brevity, combined with the ticket price, leads many to question its value. TikTokInstagram

Despite the mixed reviews, it remains a popular, albeit sometimes criticized, attraction for tourists looking for a novel way to cross the river and experience a unique facet of Shanghai's entertainment offerings. Instagram

Value for Money: A Common Concern

A recurring theme in reviews and discussions is the perceived high cost of the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel relative to the experience it offers. The one-way ticket price of 50 RMB is frequently cited as being expensive, especially when compared to other transportation options in Shanghai. InstagramReddit

Travelers often express disappointment, feeling that the tunnel is a 'tourist trap' that doesn't live up to the hype. Some expected more substantial attractions or a longer, more engaging journey for the price. The offer of a drink or discount on the other side is often seen as a weak incentive. Reddit

Many Redditors and reviewers strongly advise considering alternatives like the Shanghai Metro or the public ferry, which provide similar river crossings at a fraction of the cost and with less of a 'gimmick' feel. Reddit
