What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the unique, stunning landscape of Piedras Rojas Salar de Talar, describing it as a symphony of colors where earth meets sky. The high-altitude vistas and red rock formations are consistently praised as incredible and worth the effort. However, many highlight the extreme cold and wind, advising visitors to dress much warmer than expected, and some found the entry process and access restrictions to be unnecessary.
"Absolutely beautiful and unique landscape! It was much colder than we expected and the tour company didn’t do a good job of letting us know how to dress. The piedras Rojas are above 4000m and it was very windy so I would absolutely recommend a thicker jacket or a sweater and windbreaker. Long pants are also a must. Overall, if you are dressed correctly, it’s an incredible landscape."

"It's nice... but it is unnecessary to pay the entry fee to enjoy the lake. First of all, you have to pick a time that you will show up at. Then, pay with a credit card beforehand. Then, you have to check in at a location on the way from San Pedro. You aren't allowed to go anywhere but a narrow path. Also, we were harassed and followed by an employee who pretended to be fixing rocks that make up the narrow path. You can check it out from the viewpoints on the west side and the east side of the lake. Save you money and time, and check out the viewpoints. It's much quicker that way."

"An unique place under the Sun, when earth is meeting the sky for a symphony of colours. Stunning and incredible perspectives up to the horizon, as well as many panoramic views from Atacama desert. And everything on a high altitude, be prepared for 4k meters and more. Is worthing all the effort to be here!"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Opting for an organized tour might be beneficial as they often manage the driving and logistics, allowing parents to focus on their children. Be aware that access might be limited to specific paths, which could be a concern with very young children. The stunning, unique landscape, however, can be a memorable experience for older children who can appreciate the natural beauty and the feeling of being in a remote, otherworldly place.

Understanding the Altitude
When planning your visit, remember that the cold is a constant factor. Even on a sunny day, the wind can create a biting chill. Layering your clothing is not just a suggestion; it's a necessity. Think thermal base layers, insulating mid-layers like fleece or down, and a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Don't forget warm accessories like gloves, a hat, and a scarf to protect exposed skin.
For those sensitive to altitude, consider carrying altitude sickness medication like Diamox, after consulting with your doctor. Taking it easy on your first day at high altitude is paramount. Many tours are designed with this in mind, but if you're driving yourself, be mindful of your body's signals and don't push yourself too hard. The stunning scenery is best enjoyed when you feel well.
Navigating the Entry and Viewpoints
If you do opt for the paid entry, be aware that it often involves pre-booking a specific time slot. This system is in place to manage visitor numbers and ensure a smoother flow. It's essential to plan your travel to arrive within your allocated window. Some visitors have noted feeling closely monitored by staff within the designated paid areas, which might detract from a sense of freedom.
For those seeking a more independent and potentially cost-effective experience, focusing on the free viewpoints is a viable strategy. These locations still offer the dramatic contrast of the red rocks against the vibrant salt flats and the vast desert landscape. Researching the exact locations of these viewpoints beforehand can help you maximize your visit and capture stunning photographs without the constraints of a timed entry.
