Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Chiflón del Diablo Mine tour to be a very interesting and impressive experience, offering fascinating insights into the history of coal mining and the lives of the miners. However, the experience can be marred by logistical issues such as limited operating days, strict payment methods, and the physical demands of the tour, including muddy conditions and narrow passages.

"For foreign visitors like me, please give this a thumbs up so more people can see this information.

I gave it two stars mainly because the service was terrible. My Chilean companion checked the website in Spanish to know the opening hours. However, after traveling all the way from Concepcion by minibus and walking a lot, the ticket office told us they don't open to the public on weekdays (this was Wednesday) and we had to wait until 1 pm to see if the tour group or school group would let us join. We considered waiting, but the ticket was expensive (12,000 or 15,000 CLP, can't remember exactly), and they only accept local Chilean bank transfers—not even cash. Not sure how even local elderly people can buy ticket! The ticket office's attitude really put us off, so we decided to explore the free area and learn a bit about the miners' history and living conditions before leaving.

It was a real disappointment because I was looking forward to it. I also understood they have a footwear requirement, and many previous comments mentioned the ride to the mine is mostly a talk about the past in Spanish while wearing a helmet underground. This place has so much potential. Knowing the history of how the Cousiño family exploited the workers (they were paid in coupons to exchange for food, with no labor protection or money) and how the miners' women and children lived in constant fear and poverty is crucial. Even without an English website, they could inform people that public visits are only available on weekends and allow people to book in advance. We gave up waiting until 1:00 pm (or 4:00 pm, which was the next possible slot) and took a shared cab back to Lota city center to visit the park and the museum. The shared cab cost around 560-600 CLP per person—definitely worth it, trust me."

"Impressive experience. The mine is very interesting to visit and the insight stories fascinating to hear.
Bring good shoes because it is a bit muddy and wet in the mine. Necessary to climb lots of stairs and to duck in narrow spaces (~1m height)"

"It is a non- working coal mine that is open to the public. We did not take the tour into the mine because you walk down (and up) stairs to the bottom. We walked on top and saw the movie set of a movie called Subterra (Underground in English). All very cool. Es una mina de carbon que ya no funciona como tal. No tomamos el Tour porque hay que bajar y subir muchas escaleras. Arriba está el set de la película Subterra. Todo bien interesante."
