What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Casa de las Palmeras a pleasant and quiet place rich with Gabriela Mistral's history. While many artifacts are replicas, the house offers a valuable glimpse into her life and family. Some reviews mention concerns about the house's acquisition, but overall, it's recommended for its historical significance and atmosphere.

"It's nice to stop by and get to know it, you can get there after the lighthouse"

Alvaro Ampuero

"Not many people know that Gabriela Mistral had a house in La Serena. She bought it upon returning from Mexico, along with a large plot of land she wanted to convert into an agricultural school. She actually lived here very little, as she was sent by the government to work in other places in America and Europe. However, her sister and mother did live here. The house itself has replicas of Gabriela Mistral's objects (to see her artifacts, it's best to go to Vicuña or Montegrande), but the existing rooms reflect life in the house. To access the house, you must go through the regional library (it is open during library hours). When we went, there was a guided tour for students at a school where a very friendly man told us about the history of the place. As a curiosity, the water bill still bears the poet's real name."

Sebastian “Signs” Gonzalez

"A wonderful experience. We recommend visiting. The exhibition we visited was free."

The Legacy of Gabriela Mistral

Gabriela Mistral, born Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, was a Chilean poet, diplomat, and educator who became the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. Her work often explored themes of love, motherhood, sorrow, and nature, deeply influenced by her experiences and her commitment to social justice. The Casa de las Palmeras in La Serena was a significant place for her, representing a connection to her family and a dream of establishing an educational institution. Instagram+2

Acquired in 1925, Mistral intended the Casa de las Palmeras to be a haven for her mother and sister, and a place to develop an agricultural school. Although her demanding career as a diplomat and educator meant she spent limited time living there, the house remained a cherished property, referred to by Mistral as 'mi pañuelito de tierra' (my little handkerchief of land). Today, it stands as a Monumento Histórico, preserving the intimate memories of the Nobel laureate and her family. Instagram+1

Visiting the Casa de las Palmeras offers a unique opportunity to step into the personal world of one of literature's most influential figures. While the original artifacts are housed elsewhere, the carefully curated replicas and the preserved rooms provide a poignant glimpse into her life and the domestic sphere she shared with her loved ones.
