"Great location to get a birds eye view of the lakes with a great history of the original people. Nice bird sightings too, not a whole lot, but you can hear the chirping, sounds calming."

"Super beautiful area on the island to take a stroll through, youll see all sorts of wildlife from beautiful bright colored birds, flamingo, lizards, and more. The view is stunning and really transports you to a different world then the beaches. I would highly recommend coming. There were tons of flamingos during our drive through including an itty bitty baby! Flamingos get their color form eating shrimp and ig typically takes 5 years. Babies start out white! Would absolutely return on a future visit to the island."

"This is one of the most beautiful spots with wonderful nature in the island of Bonaire. You will see all sorts of birds and flamingos. Incredible views of the lake and the mountains beyond. I come here everyday during my short stay in Bonaire. It's a good place to stop over right before sunset. And as the sun goes down, you can drive to karpata and see the sunset from the ledges on the water's edge. One tip is to avoid the one-way Road coming from downtown Rincon. Instead drive on the coast and coming through the power station. It's the same road that is marked as the traditional wall. Don't miss The spot, as it is as iconic as the salt mounds down in the southern end of the island."

The Iconic Flamingos of Gotomeer
Flamingos on Bonaire are not native but migratory visitors, often seen in large numbers. Baby flamingos, or 'chicks,' are born white and gradually develop their pink hue as they mature and consume the nutrient-rich diet. The best time to see them is often during their breeding season, though they are present year-round. Remember to maintain a respectful distance to avoid disturbing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.
For the best viewing experience, binoculars are highly recommended. They allow you to observe the flamingos' behavior and appreciate their intricate details without getting too close. The sheer number of flamingos can be astounding, creating a surreal and unforgettable spectacle against the backdrop of the arid Bonaire landscape.
Navigating to Gotomeer: Insider Tips
However, some seasoned travelers suggest an alternative route that bypasses the one-way road directly from Rincon. This alternative involves driving along the coast, passing by the island's power station, and then heading towards the traditional 'wall' road. This route is often described as more scenic and can offer a different perspective of the island's coastline. Regardless of the path chosen, ensure your vehicle is in good condition for island roads.
Parking is available at the lookout, making it convenient to stop and enjoy the views. While public transport is scarce on Bonaire, renting a car is highly recommended for exploring the island, including Gotomeer. This flexibility allows you to visit at the optimal times for wildlife viewing and photography.
Beyond Flamingos: The Rich Biodiversity
Keep an eye out for lizards darting across the arid landscape surrounding the lake. The sounds of chirping birds create a calming ambiance, making it a peaceful escape from the bustling beaches. The contrast between the vibrant pink of the flamingos and the muted tones of the landscape is visually striking.
To truly appreciate the biodiversity, consider bringing a field guide to Bonaire's birds or using a bird identification app on your phone. This can enhance your understanding and appreciation of the different species you encounter. The natural sounds and sights here offer a different kind of island experience compared to the typical beach vacation.
