It's described as a dreamlike wonderland, offering unique winter fun. Some find the festival can become repetitive after a few hours, and a few mention the cost as a potential drawback, though most agree the experience is worth it.

"Truly one of the most magical, playful inspiring experiences of my life. A snow castle with many rooms, tunnels to crawl through, an entire working (!) concert venue, gigantic gorgeous internationally made snow sculptures, and ice slides. This year there was even a gallery of Northern photography that was full of very strong work.

Yellowknife has been blessed with this for 30 years due to Snowking’s brilliance and the amazing crew that works for two months beforehand sawing ice blocks and assembling a dreamland for everyone. I’m beyond grateful and tickled we got to see this. Like something out of a dream!"

The Genesis of Snowking's Winter Festival

The scale and artistry involved are truly remarkable, transforming a frozen lake into a whimsical, temporary kingdom. InstagramReddit

Photography Tips for the Arctic Chill

Capturing the magic of Snowking's Winter Festival and Yellowknife's winter scenery requires some preparation, especially given the extreme cold. When photographing in sub-zero temperatures, your camera's battery life will significantly decrease. It's crucial to bring spare batteries and keep them warm, ideally in an inside pocket close to your body, when not in use. Instagram

Condensation can be a major issue when moving between the cold outdoors and warm indoor spaces. To mitigate this, keep your camera in an insulated bag while transitioning and allow it to acclimate slowly. Using a tripod is highly recommended for sharper images, particularly in low light conditions or when attempting to capture the Northern Lights. Instagram

For the Northern Lights, which are a major draw for Yellowknife, consider using a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the aurora. While the festival itself is a daytime and early evening event, dedicated aurora tours will take you to darker locations for optimal viewing and photography. Remember to dress warmly yourself, as you'll be standing outside for extended periods. TikTokInstagram
