Acadia National Park is a Maine treasure! Pristine coastline, whimsical woodland hiking trails, and a beautiful beach with endless ocean views. Despite my 1,000 internal no’s to hiking the Beehive Trail, after stopping people to ask if it was safe and moderate, the look of serenity that swept over passerby’s faces convinced me to just do it! After all, if I could influence that feeling for Sam,...

MUST TRY TRAILS IN ACADIA NATIONAL PARK! 🤩 🎥: @janelletheslomad ☑️ Save for future planning! 📍PRECIPICE TRAIL Probably the most thrilling and dangerous out of the three because it has the most iron rungs! ❗️It’s best to park at the Precipice Trail Parking lot, go *up* Precipice then loop down Champlain North Ridge Trail to Orange & Black Path. 📍JORDAN CLIFFS TRAIL Least scary out of these...

Thanks for all of the birthday wishes! I spent my 55th bday doing exactly what I wanted, hiking several trails in Acadia Ntl Park with my husband. We had so much fun, especially on the Beehive Trail. Unfortunately I have few pics of him because there was no way I was letting go of those rocks and railings that high up to take a pic! He was obviously way more secure up there! 🤣🌲🐝 #acadianationalpar...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Acadia's stunning natural beauty, from its lush woodland trails to its dramatic coastline. The challenging iron-rung hikes are a major draw for thrill-seekers, while the quieter Schoodic Peninsula offers a more serene escape. Some find the park can be crowded, and certain trails require significant physical exertion.

"Stunning place for photos and to just breath in fresh air , the plants are beautiful and the grounds so well kept ."

A. Spencer

"Loved the gardens. They were lush and varied. We went late summer so some things were still in bloom. Definitely not peak for other things. The signage was great to learn about different plants and regions where to find them throughout Nova Scotia. The fountain was on and beautiful. We were able to access the building and café no problem and there was a tour taking place we didn't participate in a formal tour and just self guided around. There was lots to see and I would definitely go back!"

Abby van der Jagt

"A lovely place to walk and be in nature. My kiddo really liked the fountains. Most of the botanical gardens are dedicated to native plants from the region, which is really neat. Lots of signs telling you about the types of vegetation and individual plants. They also have some extensive walking trails, but we didn’t do those today. Oh, and it’s free!"

Navigating Acadia's Challenging Trails

Acadia National Park is renowned for its unique hiking experiences, particularly its iron-rung trails. The Beehive Trail and Precipice Trail are iconic examples, offering an adventurous ascent with the aid of iron ladders and rungs bolted into the rock face. These trails are not for the faint of heart and require a good level of physical fitness, a head for heights, and sturdy footwear. Visitors often describe the experience as thrilling and rewarding, with spectacular views from the summits. Instagram+1

When tackling these trails, it's crucial to assess your comfort level. Many travelers advise asking others who have completed the hike or watching videos beforehand to gauge the difficulty. The Precipice Trail, in particular, is considered one of the most challenging in the park due to its exposure and the sheer number of iron rungs. It's often recommended to go up Precipice and loop down via the Champlain North Ridge Trail for a safer descent. Instagram

For those seeking a less intense, yet still scenic, woodland experience, Acadia offers numerous other trails. The carriage roads, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr., provide relatively flat and well-maintained paths perfect for walking or biking. The Jordan Pond Path is a popular, moderate loop offering beautiful views of the pond and surrounding mountains. Always check trail conditions and weather forecasts before heading out, and be prepared for changing conditions. TikTok

The 'Quiet Side' of Acadia: Schoodic Peninsula

While the main part of Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island is incredibly popular, the Schoodic Peninsula offers a more tranquil and less crowded experience. This section of the park, located on the mainland, is often referred to as the 'quiet side' and is accessible via a scenic 6-mile loop drive. Instagram

The Schoodic Loop Drive features numerous scenic overlooks, pull-offs, and short trails that lead to dramatic coastal vistas. It's a fantastic place to enjoy the rugged Maine coastline without the overwhelming crowds often found elsewhere in the park. Visitors can explore rocky shores, listen to the waves crash, and take in the fresh ocean air. The peninsula also boasts its own set of hiking trails, offering a different perspective of Acadia's natural beauty. Instagram

This area is ideal for those seeking a more relaxed visit or looking to escape the hustle and bustle. It's a perfect spot for photography, picnicking, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk in nature. The drive itself is a highlight, with stunning views around every bend. Remember to check for any seasonal closures or specific access information for the Schoodic Peninsula before your visit.
