Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the incredible wildlife encounters, with many spotting multiple whale species, seals, and sea lions. The knowledgeable and friendly crew, particularly naturalists and first mates, are frequently highlighted for enhancing the educational and enjoyable experience. The value for money is also a recurring positive point. Some minor concerns include potential seasickness on choppier days and the need for warm clothing.

"Had a fantastic afternoon with Prince of Whales! The rest of my crew went to the gardens and high tea, but I got a ticket for a Prince of Whales tour, and it exceeded my expectations. We saw Minke, Orca and Humpback whales, along with a ton of sea lions and some sheep! The naturalists onboard (Janae, Megan and Eden) were super knowledgeable and friendly, excited to answer any questions. First Mate Sandy was really great, too, and pointed my lens towards interesting things several times. And Captain Richard handled the boat very well, taking us close (but not too close) to whale locations.

I was just on an 11-day Alaska cruise, and this was the best thing I did! I highly recommend Prince of Whales. It was also the least expensive excursion I took; a real bargain! Thank you very much."

"This is a must try if you spending some time in Victoria! We went on a Caterham boat 🚢. It between 3 to 4 hours whale tour. You can also choose the speed boat looking boats also if you are the adventurous type! Reid and Megan were very knowledgeable about the animals we encountered. We saw hump back whales, California seal lions and harbor seals. We found it easiest to book online compared to by the boat kiosk. They also take tons of pictures so you can just enjoy the ride without worrying about taking pics. They seems like their the only company to offer this. It makes experience relaxing."

"An unforgettable whale watching experience!

We went out with Prince of Whales on September 29th at 12:30, and it was absolutely incredible from start to finish. Huge thanks to Captain Richard, First Mate Sandy, and the amazing naturalists Michael, Reid, and Megan for making the trip so fun, educational, and memorable!

We covered about 49 nautical miles and saw Orcas, humpback whales and tons of wildlife around Race Rocks, including sea lions and harbor seals. The crew’s passion and knowledge really made the experience special — they were always eager to share insights and made sure everyone got great views and photos.

If you’re visiting Victoria or Vancouver, this is a must-do adventure. Thank you, Prince of Whales team, for an incredible day on the Salish Sea!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Choosing Your Whale Watching Adventure

Victoria offers a variety of whale watching experiences, primarily departing from the bustling Inner Harbour. You can choose between larger, more stable cruiser boats or smaller, faster zodiacs. Cruisers offer more comfort and amenities, often including onboard restrooms and heated cabins, making them ideal for families or those prone to seasickness. Zodiacs, on the other hand, provide a more exhilarating, up-close-and-personal encounter with the ocean and its inhabitants, though they can be bumpier and wetter. Reddit

When selecting a tour, consider the duration, the type of wildlife you're most eager to see, and the company's reputation. Many operators focus on specific areas known for whale activity, such as Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. The crew's knowledge and passion are crucial; look for tours with experienced naturalists who can educate you about the marine ecosystem and help you spot the best wildlife. Reddit

Key takeaway: Research different tour operators, read reviews, and choose the boat type and tour duration that best suits your preferences and comfort level for an unforgettable marine adventure. Instagram+1

What Wildlife to Expect

The waters around Victoria are rich with marine life, making whale watching a consistently rewarding experience. The most sought-after sightings are humpback whales, known for their impressive breaches and fluke displays. Orcas, or killer whales, are also a thrilling sight, often seen in pods as they hunt or travel. Minke whales are another species you might encounter. Reddit

Beyond the whales, the Salish Sea teems with other fascinating creatures. Keep an eye out for California sea lions and harbor seals basking on rocky shores or swimming near the boat. The diverse birdlife includes various gulls, cormorants, and even bald eagles soaring overhead. Race Rocks, a marine protected area, is a particularly good spot for observing seals and sea lions. Reddit

Pro Tip: While whale sightings are common, wildlife is unpredictable. The best tours have knowledgeable guides who can also point out other interesting marine mammals and birds, ensuring a rich and engaging experience even if the whales are elusive on a particular day. TikTokInstagram
