Reviews Summary

Visitors find Manoir Boucher de Niverville to be an inexpensive and quick historical stop, with many praising the quality of the audio guides for the bioarchaeology exhibition. However, some are disappointed by the lack of traditional historical displays, as the focus is primarily on scientific exploration rather than period life.

"We had high hopes for this but unfortunately not what we expected! Echoing other recent reviews, there wasn't very much information of interest to us as the whole exhibition focused on bioarcheology. Was hoping for more highlights of the architecture, life at the time it was built, etc."

Maddy Fisher

"Unfortunately they really didn't utilize the wonderful history of the house. It should be set up in period with appropriate furniture and descriptions of life inside. Instead they have a modern and rather dry display of archeological techniques. Disappointing. At least they are part of the carte musées. If I paid for this separately I'd be pretty steamed. Plan on 10-15 minutes."

Understanding the Exhibition Focus

Manoir Boucher de Niverville offers a unique experience, but it's crucial to understand its current exhibition focus. Unlike many historical manors that highlight period furnishings and the daily lives of past inhabitants, this site has pivoted to showcase bioarchaeology. This means the exhibits delve into the scientific study of human remains from archaeological contexts, exploring topics like diet, health, migration, and burial practices. Visitors can expect to learn about the techniques used by bioarchaeologists to uncover these insights.

While some visitors express a desire for more traditional historical displays, the bioarchaeology exhibition provides a distinct and educational perspective. It's an opportunity to engage with a different facet of history and science. The use of audio guides is highly recommended by visitors to fully appreciate the nuances of the scientific information presented, making the experience more enriching and informative. Reddit+1

For those interested in the architectural history of the manor itself, the exterior and the basic structure of the building still offer a glimpse into 17th-century French colonial construction. However, the interior presentation is geared towards the scientific exhibition rather than recreating historical living spaces. Reddit

Visitor Experience and Expectations

Reviews for Manoir Boucher de Niverville are mixed, largely depending on visitor expectations. Many appreciate the inexpensive admission and the opportunity for a quick, informative stop. The historical significance of the manor as a 17th-century structure is noted, providing a tangible link to the past. The audio guides are frequently praised for their quality and ability to enhance the understanding of the bioarchaeology exhibits, turning what might otherwise be a dry presentation into an engaging experience. Reddit

However, some visitors express disappointment if they arrive expecting a traditional historical house tour. Comments often mention a lack of period furniture or detailed narratives about the lives of the people who lived there. The exhibition's strong focus on bioarchaeology, while fascinating to some, can be a departure from what others anticipate from a manor house visit. Therefore, it's important to go in with an understanding of the site's current thematic direction to fully enjoy what Manoir Boucher de Niverville has to offer. Reddit+1
