Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the scenic ferry ride and the beautiful escape the Toronto Islands offer. The stunning skyline views from the islands and the ferry are a major highlight. However, long wait times for the ferry, especially during peak periods, are a common point of frustration for many. Reddit+1

"The Terminal can get crowded when busy, especially if they are not using the Trillium to help get people to and from the Islands. However, the it's great to have the service and the city dock is easily accessible by the TTC and GO Transit. The terminal does a good job and it's nice to go for a ferry ride.

If you get the chance, go to the city docks and take a ride on a ferry."

Edward Brain

"The terminal offers a bright, spacious, and welcoming atmosphere surrounded by greenery, trees, and stunning lake views. It's ideal for families, walking, and a variety of outdoor activities. The scenery alone—water, nature, and open skies—makes it worth the visit.

The boarding process is well-organized, especially for those who purchase tickets online in advance. Facilities are clean and signage is clear, which makes navigation easy for first-time visitors. Everything feels neat and well-maintained.

While the experience is enjoyable, it’s worth noting that during peak hours (weekends and summer days), the terminal can get quite crowded, and lineups may be long. Also, parking is not directly on-site, which may require a short walk from nearby lots.

Overall, it's a pleasant and well-managed gateway to the Toronto Islands, perfect for nature lovers and anyone looking to escape the city for a day."

Hashem Salah

"Line was moving fast, prices not bad. About $10 for return trip. A bit confusing inside where to go. Online information is better than in person. Ferry times to different Islands etc is better visible online. Also doesn't matter which ferry you take all Islands are connected just walk 30 min between Islands if you want to explore anyway. And return to city is also from any ferry from any of the 3 Islands. Remember to take your bicycle and dog along! Great outing!"

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Toronto Islands are a fantastic destination for families. Centre Island is particularly popular with children, offering the Franklin Children's Garden, a small amusement park, and plenty of open space for running around. The ferry ride itself is an adventure for kids, and the islands provide a safe environment for them to explore. TikTok

Consider packing snacks and drinks, as options on the islands can be limited or pricey. Strollers are generally manageable on the paved paths, but be prepared for some gravel sections. Taking a water taxi might be a good option for families with very young children to minimize waiting times. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

Navigating the Ferry System

The Jack Layton Ferry Terminal is your gateway to the Toronto Islands. The primary mode of transport is the official City of Toronto ferry service. Tickets are purchased for a round trip, but you only pay for the outbound journey. This makes the return trip free, a valuable tip if you decide to use a water taxi for your initial journey to the islands. Reddit+1

Be prepared for potential queues, especially during peak season, weekends, and holidays. While purchasing tickets online can save you time at the ticket booth, you will still need to wait in line for the ferry itself. Reddit+1 Some travelers suggest taking the ferry to Ward's Island, which can sometimes have shorter boarding lines than the Centre Island ferry, and then walking to your desired destination. Reddit

For those seeking a quicker or more direct route, water taxis are an alternative. They are more expensive than the ferry but can significantly reduce your travel time and offer more flexibility in terms of drop-off points on the islands. TikTok+1
