What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Lawrence Grassi is lauded for its spectacular summit views and challenging, rewarding hike. While the direct trail is steep and involves scrambling, the panoramic scenery makes the effort worthwhile for many. Some find the summit challenging for beginners, and trail navigation can be tricky above the treeline.
"Great hike. Took the direct trail up mid July (find on AllTrails). Trail is reasonably easy to follow (look for tape in trees and cairns the rest of the way). Once you’re above the tree line as long as you’re heading upwards you’ll find your way to the peak with minimal issues. Bit of a scramble after you’re out of tree line and towards the top the gravel on the exposed rock makes the trail a bit slippy but nothing impossible. Quite steep. Poles definitely would’ve been helpful. Do your research before attempting!"

"Terrific scramble. I gained by sidehilling over from the Ha Ling approach, but I've heard there is also a direct trail. Helmet recommended, as are crampons and an axe depending on the season. Compass also recommended, as this mountain is not that commonly done and it is quite easy to mix up the narrow approach trail with the many, many intertwined game trails. Stay safe and enjoy! :-)"

"A lovely hike with gorgeous views but the summit is not for rookies. Hiking poles are very useful for the steep terrain.
From where Ha Long starts, stick to the path along the canal instead. It’s an easy flat walk for a couple kilometres until just past the rock slide. The trail head starts there with some boulders and sticks marking the spot.
It’s an easy forest meander to an empty river bed. You follow the rocks a very short distance until a big boulder with sticks and trail tape marks the entrance back into trees on the left.
The rest of the trail is steep. As there are few switchbacks, you gain altitude quickly. You’re above the tree line in no time and have gorgeous views of mountains looking south (a nice change from many of the Canmore area mountains giving views of Canmore).
Above the tree line has a meadow feel and that alone can make a really nice hike. If you are not experienced with more difficult summits you should be very careful of your limits as you proceed.
The terrain becomes a mixture of loose slippery rock and large grippy boulders. It’s a bit of a choose your own adventure path to the summit though you’ll want to stick to the grippy boulders.
Once you are very close to the summit you can expect to be on your hands and knees at points due to the steep and loose terrain, and it is no easier on the way down.
It is steep the whole way down as well. Please don’t slide down as that makes the trail even harder for the next hikers. Take your time to find proper steps."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For families seeking a more accessible mountain experience near Canmore, consider the Grassi Lakes trail (which is a separate, easier hike often confused with Mount Lawrence Grassi) or the lower portions of the Ha Ling trail. Navigating the Trails: Direct vs. Ha Ling Approach
The Ha Ling approach provides a more scenic and gradual introduction to the mountain. This route involves following a path that eventually connects to the summit. It's generally considered less technical than the direct trail, offering a more relaxed experience with beautiful mountain scenery along the way. Many hikers opt to combine parts of the Ha Ling trail with the ascent of Mount Lawrence Grassi for a varied hiking day.
Regardless of the chosen route, hiking poles are highly recommended due to the steep terrain and loose scree, particularly on the descent. Researching current trail conditions and choosing the route that best matches your fitness and experience level is crucial for a safe and enjoyable hike.
Summit Views and Photography
For photographers, the summit offers incredible opportunities for both wide-angle landscape shots and telephoto captures of distant peaks. The changing light throughout the day can dramatically alter the scenery, making sunrise and sunset particularly magical, though hikers should be prepared for challenging conditions in low light. The contrast between the rugged mountain terrain and the vast sky is a recurring theme in many stunning images shared online.
When planning your photography expedition, consider bringing a wide-angle lens to encompass the sweeping panoramas and a telephoto lens to focus on specific mountain features. A sturdy tripod can be invaluable for capturing sharp images during dawn or dusk. Remember to also check regulations regarding drone usage, as they are often restricted in provincial parks.
Seasonal Considerations and Safety
Spring and Fall bring fewer crowds and beautiful seasonal colors, but conditions can be more unpredictable. Snowmelt can make trails muddy and slippery, and early or late snow is possible. Winter hiking is for experienced individuals only, requiring specialized gear such as crampons, an ice axe, and warm, waterproof clothing. The trails can be covered in snow and ice, making navigation more difficult.
Safety is paramount on Mount Lawrence Grassi. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Inform someone of your hiking plans, including your expected return time. Be aware of your surroundings, stay on marked trails, and know your limits. The loose scree and steep sections near the summit can be hazardous if not approached with caution.
