Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Fort Henry for its immersive historical experience, knowledgeable staff, and breathtaking waterfront views. The live re-enactments and cannon firings are major highlights, making history feel alive. Some find the ticket prices a bit high for the fort's size, and a few mention that hot, shadeless days can be uncomfortable.

"Fabulous place to head up to watch the sunset.

We went on the haunted walk at night which was relatively cool except we had a young person as part of the tour maybe 10 or 11 years old who didn't follow any of the rules repeatedly made noise and Flash their flashlight which really ruined the ambience and the parents weren't doing much about it.

Lots of cool spiders though!"

Julia Warkentin

"A fantastic experience that is well worth the visit. Tickets are a little pricy but its made up for with fantastic staff that are all very knowledgeable about the fort and the history of it plus the live drills they perform. On top of this the views offered from the fort are breathtaking. I'd argue this is thee place to visit for anything historical about Kingston if you only had one place you could visit, this would be the one I would choose hands down."

Patrick Breaugh

The Fort's Strategic Importance and History

Originally built during the War of 1812, Fort Henry played a crucial role in defending Canada. It was later rebuilt in the 1830s as a formidable British military fortress. Its strategic location on a peninsula overlooking Lake Ontario and the entrance to the Rideau Canal made it vital for protecting trade routes and deterring potential American invasions. Instagram

The fort was manned by British soldiers until 1870 and then by Canadian troops until 1891. After falling into disrepair, it was meticulously restored in the 1930s under the direction of Ronald L. Way and opened as a living history museum in 1938. This restoration effort preserved its historical integrity and transformed it into the educational attraction it is today. Instagram

Exploring Fort Henry provides a tangible connection to Canada's early military history. Understanding its strategic purpose and the lives of the soldiers who garrisoned it adds a deeper layer of appreciation to the visit. The historical context provided by guides and exhibits truly enriches the experience. Instagram
