What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally praise the Kananaskis Nordic Spa for its stunning mountain setting and rejuvenating hydrotherapy circuit, highlighting the invigorating cold plunges and diverse saunas. However, some find the strict no-re-entry and no-phone policies restrictive, and the limited robe sizes have been noted as a drawback.
"I wanted to love the Kananaskis Nordic Spa more than I did. It was a lovely experience, but vastly different from other Nordic Spas I have visited (in terms of specific rules) so that made it a bit of a let down for me. We were staying at the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge to celebrate a friends 40th birthday, so we had all booked massages and the spa circuit for the day. The staff was very professional and welcoming. The weather was beautiful and just perfect for us to be outside for the circuit pools, etc. A major bummer was that in the months leading up to the trip, we were receiving emails each week about renovations happening and various areas being tented and/or closed during our stay. It was unfortunate to not be able to experience those closed areas AND the construction was unsightly. A few downsides: 1) You are not allowed re-entry, even if you are a guest at the lodge. For the price you pay to access the spa, this was very frustrating. We were not made aware of this information prior to our appointments so we had to run back to our rooms to gather items that we needed for the day. There is one restaurant on the spa grounds where we could eat lunch. 2) You are not allowed to use your cell phone inside the spa or circuit area. I can understand that their motto is 'disconnect to reconnect' but considering we were planning on listening to podcasts and/or reading on our phones and lounging in the hammocks after the circuit, this was disappointing. And we were celebrating a birthday so we had intentions of taking photos. ALSO we had booked the childcare for a few hours with the lodge and were very uncomfortable about not being able to be reachable or in communication with them, should they require to speak to us. So I ended up leaving after my massage and just one circuit. 3) They only offer 2 sizes of robes - small or large - and it isn't accommodating to the various body sizes that would be visiting the area. A few members of our group had travelled a long way, paid for the experience, and then didn't get to enjoy the aspect of the robes/slippers as the rest of the group. Again, just disappointing. It would be nice to see them increase the size range of robes offered. 4) The circuit isn't really explained to you upon arrival and you kind of just have to wing-it if you have never been to a Nordic Spa. 5) There is not enough seating for lounging/hanging out unless you are in one of the pools or saunas, etc."

"Kananaskis nordic spa was absolutely amazing! I took my girls here the day before my wedding and we have never felt so relaxed. We were all unsure about the cold plunge but we were happily surprised with how invigorating it made us feel! The massage were amazing and we loved the fact we could not use our phones. The chance to disconnect and reconnect before my special day was priceless! I definitely recommend this spa!"

"Amazing place! Tons of saunas and pools, 2 steam rooms, a cold plunge, spots to relax, and much more. We spent a half day at the spa and would definitely come back. The food at the bistro was also great. There was some construction at the hotel but we could hardly hear it."

The Kananaskis Nordic Spa Experience: Hydrotherapy Explained
Visitors often highlight the Alchemist Steam Room for its unique aromatherapy and mineral-rich steam, and the intimate barrel saunas as perfect for couples or solo relaxation. The cold plunge pools, while daunting for some, are frequently cited as surprisingly invigorating and a highlight of the experience, leaving guests feeling refreshed and energized.
It's important to note that the spa emphasizes a 'disconnect to reconnect' philosophy, meaning no cell phones or cameras are allowed within the circuit. This policy, while limiting photo opportunities, is central to fostering a truly serene and present experience for all guests.
Navigating the 'Disconnect to Reconnect' Policy
While this policy enhances the tranquility, it can be a significant adjustment for those accustomed to documenting their travels. Visitors celebrating special occasions, like birthdays or pre-wedding relaxation, may find it challenging not to capture memories or stay connected with external needs, such as childcare. It's crucial for visitors to mentally prepare for this digital detox and embrace the opportunity to be fully present.
For those who find the policy restrictive, it's worth considering that the spa's unique atmosphere and the therapeutic benefits of the hydrotherapy circuit are designed to be the primary focus. The lack of digital interruption can, for many, lead to a more profound sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.
Planning Your Visit: What to Know Before You Go
Furthermore, the spa offers a limited range of robe and slipper sizes (small or large), which can be an issue for guests outside these standard fits. It's advisable to be prepared for this possibility and perhaps bring comfortable clothing if the provided options are not suitable.
Understanding the hydrotherapy circuit is also beneficial. While staff are available, the spa doesn't always provide a detailed explanation upon arrival. Familiarizing yourself with the hot-cold-rest cycle beforehand can help you maximize the benefits and enjoy the experience more fully.
