Reviews Summary

Johnston Canyon is widely praised for its stunning waterfalls, unique catwalk trails, and accessible hiking suitable for families. Visitors appreciate the dramatic scenery and the opportunity to get close to nature. However, the popularity means it can get very crowded, leading to parking difficulties and queues at viewpoints, especially during peak hours.

"A scenic walk along the canyon walkways, suitable for families, mainly gentle gradients with a few steeper sections on the way to the lower and upper falls.
To see both the lower and upper falls is about a 6.5km walk taking about 3 hours there and back (not including wait time in the queues)
The trails were busy and parking was difficult, having to circle round the parking lot to wait for a space.
There were queues at both the lower and upper falls taking about 30 minutes each, but worth the wait to see the falls.
Definitely worth visiting for the dramatic scenery and views."

Grumpy Old Dad

"The hike is well-suited for kids, featuring safe walkways and only gentle elevation changes, making it accessible for most ages. Parking is generally accessible, but the area is busy—especially during peak hours—so arriving early is recommended to secure a spot and avoid the crowds. Overall, Johnston Canyon offers a rewarding experience for hikers of all ages. Scenic waterfalls and an easy trail that’s great for families."

Vinaksi Lalotra

"Johnston Canyon is a must-visit! It’s a moderate hike that took us about 2.5 hours round trip to see both the lower and upper falls. The trail was quite busy this time of year, and there was a bit of a wait at the lower falls viewpoint—but totally worth it. The path is well-maintained and clean, and the scenery throughout is breathtaking. You get incredible views of the forest, snow-covered mountains, dramatic canyons, waterfalls, and the turquoise river cutting through the rocks. Truly stunning!

Be sure to carry water and wear comfortable shoes. Parking can be tricky depending on the day and time, so plan accordingly. But overall, it’s more than worth the 20,000 steps!"

These walkways allow visitors to traverse the canyon floor and get incredibly close to the rushing water and waterfalls. The engineering marvel provides a unique perspective, making you feel immersed in the natural environment. TikTok

The catwalks were constructed to provide safe access to the canyon's most spectacular features without damaging the delicate ecosystem. They offer thrilling views, especially when looking down into the turquoise waters below. Many visitors find the experience of walking on these suspended pathways to be a highlight of their visit. Reddit

During winter, these catwalks can become icy, so wearing appropriate footwear with good traction is essential. The frozen spray from the waterfalls can also create beautiful ice formations on the railings and walls, adding to the magical winter scenery. Instagram+1
