What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning natural beauty of Hot Springs Cove and the adventurous journey to get there, often spotting incredible wildlife. However, many note that the hot springs themselves can become extremely crowded, with narrow pools making it difficult to find personal space. The slippery rocks and boardwalk stairs are also common points of caution.
"Nice forest boardwalk hike to the hot springs. The hot springs get very crowded as multiple tour groups are there at the same time. It's a very cool place and the hot water feels very nice but expect to be surrounded by a lot of people. The hot spring isn't that big and the pools are narrow so a lot of squeezing by people is necessary. Definitely bring water shoes because the rocks are sharp and also very slippery near the water."

"What an amazing wild hot springs! Make sure you wear water shoes as the rocks are slippery. The ♨️ waterfall is 40C and has narrow and multiple pools leading to the ocean, cool down by the sea. There's out house and 2 changing rooms. Takes about 30min to walk from dock to the hot springs, on nice wooden boardwalk with lots of ups and downs."

"Such a beautiful spot. Took an hour and a half boat ride from tofino. Saw gray whales, seals, sea otters. Trail is an easy boardwalk through lush forest. There is a bit of stairs along it however. There was a bit of rotation of people coming and going from the pools but it was ok and everyone seemed to find their happy spot to soak. Bring water shoes!"

Choosing Your Transportation: Boat vs. Seaplane
For a more exhilarating and time-efficient option, consider a seaplane tour. While typically more expensive, seaplanes offer breathtaking aerial views of the coastline and islands, significantly reducing travel time. It's a unique way to arrive, with the added thrill of landing on the water.
When booking, compare prices and what's included. Some tours focus heavily on wildlife viewing, while others prioritize the hot springs experience. Water taxi services are also available, which can be a more direct, though less guided, option.
Navigating the Hot Springs and Boardwalk
The hot springs themselves are a series of natural pools cascading down rocks towards the ocean. The water temperature averages around 50°C (122°F), offering a wonderfully warm soak. However, the rocks around the springs are notoriously slippery and sharp, making water shoes absolutely essential for safety and comfort.
Be prepared for crowds, as the pools are relatively small and can become quite congested, especially during peak times. Visitors often describe a need to 'squeeze by' others to find a spot. Despite the crowds, the unique setting of soaking in natural hot water with the ocean nearby is a memorable experience.
The Natural Phenomenon of Hot Springs Cove
Ocean water is drawn into fractured rock formations miles below the surface, where it is heated by the earth's core. This superheated water then finds its way back to the surface through fissures in the rock, creating the natural hot springs. The mineral-rich water flows down a rocky cascade, offering a unique bathing experience where the hot spring water mixes with the cooler ocean water.
These springs have been utilized for centuries by the Ahousaht Nation for their medicinal and spiritual properties, adding a layer of cultural significance to the site.
