What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Old City Hall for its stunning Romanesque Revival architecture and the rare opportunity to explore its interior during summer open hours. The iconic clock tower and detailed stonework are frequently highlighted as impressive features. While it now serves as a courthouse, its historical significance and visual appeal remain strong draws for tourists and photographers alike.
"Years back, my partner (now ex-partner) and I were driving along Highway 7 to go to a travel destination west of Guelph. Directionally challenged (especially him, as the driver), I was navigating by using a paper map. Paper maps don't point out that some are one-way streets. It didn't help matters that, regardless of our road trip destinations, The Ex always kept changing his mind about the route midway through our travels, leaving me to scramble for new directions that were acceptable to him! Stressful! The absolute worst was our trip to New Jersey for a wedding.
Anyway, somehow we "lost" Highway 7 that's we'd been motoring on once we started driving through Guelph. Confused, we pulled over by the sidewalk and were both poring over the map. Of course, he didn't want to stop at a service station to ask for directions. Then an Angel of Mercy rescued us, dressed as a Guelph Police Officer. He parked ahead of us and asked our problem so I explained. It looked like the officer was considering the options of the route that we could take to get back to Highway 7 without our getting lost midway through Guelph again. Then, he generously offered: "I'll take you through Guelph. You follow my car. I'll drive through the streets in Guelph but can't take you past the city limits. I'll wave you to drive past at the edge of Guelph."
What a wonderful police officer! His route worked for us, of course. My ex and I were successfully able to get back onto Highway 7 to continue our road trip without any further arguments. We were escorted out of town by a police officer in the nicest possible way!
To this day, I am grateful to that kind police officer who obviously showed excellent and perceptive customer service skills. He demonstrated a Guelph community spirit in helping out confused visitors. Thank you, Guelph!
BTW, I found an alternative route to get home from our road trip. I do hope to return to Guelph to visit as a tourist, hopefully this summer."
