"One of the greenest campuses I’ve seen. Perched on a hill and ringed by parks, it spreads across acres of lawns, modern buildings, and quiet walking paths. Study rooms are easy to find, the library is bright and airy with lots of open workspaces, and you’re never far from a local café or shop just off campus. Staff are genuinely friendly and happy to help visitors get oriented. My only wish is for clearer way-finding signs for first-timers, but overall it’s a stellar place to study, stroll, and recharge."

Exploring the Architecture

Simon Fraser University's Burnaby campus is a masterpiece of brutalist architecture, largely designed by Arthur Erickson. The Academic Quadrangle is a prime example, with its imposing concrete structures and interconnected spaces that create a unique, almost fortress-like atmosphere. Instagram This design philosophy emphasizes raw materials and geometric forms, which gives the campus a distinct and memorable aesthetic. Many visitors are struck by the scale and boldness of the buildings, which stand in contrast to the natural beauty of Burnaby Mountain. Reddit

Beyond the Quadrangle, Erickson's influence is felt throughout the campus. The design aimed to create a self-contained academic village, with buildings strategically placed to foster interaction and a sense of community. The integration of the architecture with the natural landscape is also a key feature, with buildings often appearing to emerge from the mountainside. Instagram This thoughtful planning contributes to the campus's serene and inspiring environment, making it a fascinating place to explore for architecture enthusiasts. Reddit

Campus Life and Community

SFU Burnaby offers a vibrant campus life, even with its somewhat isolated location atop the mountain. The UniverCity development adjacent to the campus provides convenient rental units and amenities, allowing students to live within walking distance of classes and services. Reddit This has fostered a growing community feel around the university. For those living on campus, residence tours showcase the living arrangements, from single rooms to family units, highlighting the diverse housing options available. Instagram

The university is also known for its strong academic programs, particularly in science and engineering, and its highly regarded co-op program. Reddit This program provides students with valuable work experience, often helping them secure employment shortly after graduation. Reddit The campus buzzes with student activity, from study groups in the library to events and gatherings, creating a dynamic academic environment. InstagramReddit

Nature and Green Spaces

Perched on Burnaby Mountain, SFU offers a unique blend of academic facilities and natural beauty. The Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area surrounds the campus, providing extensive trails for walking, hiking, and enjoying the lush West Coast rainforest. Instagram Visitors often praise the campus for its cleanliness and serene ambiance, making it an ideal spot for both focused study and peaceful strolls. Reddit

The campus itself is designed with green spaces in mind, featuring expansive lawns and quiet walking paths that are particularly inviting during the summer months.
