What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hikers praise Aylmer Lookout for its absolutely stunning, rewarding views of Lake Minnewanka, calling it one of the most beautiful hikes they've ever done. However, many find the trail extremely long and grueling, with a relentless uphill climb and strong winds at the summit, making it a challenging experience for even fit hikers.
"Long trail but no so difficult hike with amazing view overlooking Lake Minnewanka. Share same trail with mountain bikers if you hike in for the first 8 KM to the campground. Seasonal trail restriction from July 10 to September 15"

"Really underrated hike. I encountered maybe 5 groups on the trail, and most of them were campers and backpackers. It is really hard, but definitely worth it. Prepare for lots of incline and extreme wind at the top. It took me about 7 hours to complete the 15 miles. There is possibility of seeing bears on the trail so be prepared with bear spray. Overall definitely worth it, but very grueling so you must be fit and experienced. It is a beautiful lookout of Lake Minnewanka that I was able to capture with the 0.5 feature on my phone. Additionally, I came to Banff in late June, so this hike was the most difficult hike in Banff National Park that was safe to hike (no avalanche danger). It is 15 miles and 3,500ft of elevation gain, although my apple watch recording said the round trip was only 3,000ft of elevation gain."

"Challengingly long hike and only recommended in a bit of cooler weather, but overall worth it. Did this for the second time"

Navigating Bear Safety on the Trail
Remember that bears are most active during dawn and dusk. If you encounter a bear, remain calm, do not run, and slowly back away. Making noise by talking or singing can help alert bears to your presence and prevent surprise encounters. The presence of bears is a reminder that you are in their natural habitat, and respecting their space is paramount for both your safety and the well-being of the wildlife.
The Physical Demands of Aylmer Lookout
Given the physical exertion required, this hike is best suited for experienced hikers who are in good physical condition. Proper preparation is key; ensure you have adequate training, sturdy hiking boots, and plenty of water and snacks. While some reviews mention the trail being 'straight uphill' with 'no views except the trees,' others emphasize that the rewarding summit view is worth every step. It's important to manage expectations and be prepared for a strenuous but ultimately gratifying adventure.
Capturing the Iconic Views
For the best photographic results, consider visiting during the golden hours – early morning or late afternoon. The soft, warm light can dramatically enhance the colors of the landscape and create stunning visual effects. A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to fully capture the expansive scale of the views. Including a person in your shots can also effectively convey the immense size of the natural scenery. While a smartphone camera can capture beautiful memories, a more advanced camera setup will allow for greater detail and creative control over your landscape photography.
