Best Time for Mud-Free Trails

Avoid the notorious mud of Amethyst Lakes by timing your visit carefully. While beautiful year-round, late September to early October can be extremely muddy. Snowfall can actually make the ground firmer, but camping in snow isn't ideal. Consider late summer for potentially fewer mosquitoes, but be prepared for them.

Backpacking & Safety First

Amethyst Lakes is best experienced as a multi-day hike. Solo hiking is not recommended due to potential wildlife encounters like cougars. Plan for a backpacking trip and be aware of trail conditions, especially the persistent mud and fierce mosquitoes in peak summer months.

Trae making his way down to the valley floor. At this point we were all looking forward to a swim in the lake. To our dismay Amethyst Lakes was is coldest inland body of water we had ever visited. Even gathering drinking water resulted in inevitably numb feet. 🎞️ #portra400 📷 #mamiya645 🧪 @downtowncamera #mec #kodak #alberta #tonquinvalley #afilmcosmos #filmphotography #shootfilmmag #canada #...

Reviews Summary

Amethyst Lakes is lauded for its spectacular turquoise waters and stunning alpine scenery, offering a unique mountain beach experience. However, visitors frequently encounter challenging, muddy trails and intense mosquito swarms, especially in summer. The extreme cold of the lake water is also a notable aspect. It's a destination that rewards perseverance with breathtaking, albeit demanding, natural beauty.

"Hiked there end of September, early October and the trails were extremely muddy. Constantly having to make our own paths to navigate around the mud and water. We actually liked when it snowed as it made the ground hard, but camping in the snow is not ideal. We made a youtube video on the trail conditions, so if you type: "Getting to Amethyst Lake in Jasper National Park" - you will see the conditions of the trail and our further recommendations. The lake is beautiful, just difficult to get to."

"Spectacular area. Fairly accessible by hiking, but probably best experienced as a multi-day hike. The mosquitoes are fierce around August so be prepared. Solo hiking is not advisable, possible cougar sightings in the valley."

Emily Osborne

"Hiked here in summer of 1979. Incredible beauty. Lots of mosquitoes though."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Amethyst Lakes is a challenging destination for families with young children due to the extensive hiking required and the backcountry nature of the area. The multi-day treks and potential for difficult trail conditions (mud, bugs) make it more suitable for older, experienced hikers. If your family enjoys strenuous backpacking and is comfortable with remote wilderness, it can be an incredible adventure. Ensure you have appropriate gear for all weather conditions and pack plenty of snacks and entertainment for the trail. Reddit

For families seeking a more accessible experience in Jasper National Park, consider exploring easier trails around Maligne Lake or the Athabasca Falls. These offer stunning scenery without the demanding commitment of a Tonquin Valley backpacking trip. Always prioritize safety and choose activities that match your family's capabilities and comfort level in the backcountry. TikTok

The reward is unparalleled natural beauty without the high price tag of more developed tourist attractions. Remember to factor in transportation to the trailhead, which might involve carpooling or public transport if available. Reddit

Navigating the Tonquin Valley Trails

The journey to Amethyst Lakes is an adventure in itself, primarily through the Tonquin Valley. This area is renowned for its stunning alpine scenery but also for its challenging trail conditions. Hikers frequently report persistent mud and waterlogged sections, making waterproof footwear and gaiters highly recommended. Some visitors have found that snowfall can actually firm up the ground, making it easier to traverse than the deep mud experienced at other times. Planning for a multi-day backpacking trip is the most common and recommended way to experience Amethyst Lakes, allowing ample time to explore the valley and enjoy the remote beauty. Reddit

When planning your hike, be aware of the wildlife in the area. The Tonquin Valley is home to elk, caribou, bears, and cougars. Solo hiking is strongly discouraged due to these potential encounters. It's crucial to practice bear safety, including proper food storage and making noise on the trail. Always check the latest trail reports and advisories from Parks Canada before your trip. InstagramReddit

The Astoria River trailhead is a primary access point for reaching Amethyst Lakes. The hike involves significant elevation gain and distance, so adequate preparation and fitness are essential. The Unique Amethyst Lakes Experience

Amethyst Lakes is celebrated for its striking turquoise waters, a result of glacial silt suspended in the water. This vibrant color, set against a backdrop of mountains and often a unique sandy mountain beach, creates a surreal and picturesque landscape. Visitors often describe the beauty as unparalleled, with some calling it the most beautiful thing they've ever seen. Instagram

Despite its visual appeal, the water temperature is a significant factor. Even during warmer months, the glacial meltwater is intensely cold, making any attempt to swim a bracing and brief affair. Many visitors find their feet go numb simply by wading into the shallows. Instagram

The mosquito population can be a considerable challenge, particularly in peak summer months. Travelers advise being well-prepared with effective insect repellent. While the mud and bugs can be deterrents, the sheer beauty of Amethyst Lakes often makes the effort worthwhile for those seeking a truly wild and memorable Canadian Rockies experience. TikTokReddit
