What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Sumas Mountain Regional Park offers stunning summit views and a refreshing lake, but visitors should be prepared for rough roads and potentially poorly marked, muddy trails. While many enjoy the natural beauty and challenging hikes, some find the road conditions and trail maintenance disappointing.
"The road is a bit rough, and there's not much signage of where your vehicle can go if you wish to start further up. If you drive up past the Sumas Mountain Regional Park sign, you eventually come to a yellow gate. There's room to park on the side of the road to walk the remainder of the way up to the lookouts and the lake - the forest trail is slightly shorter and more interesting but the gravel road path is wider to go along. If you reach the first lookout, Bakers Point is just 200m farther and the views are incredible on a clear day!
There may be snow along the sides of the trails in cooler weather, even when there is no snow at the bottom."

"I came to this place for the first time. The atmosphere is very good, shady, cool and fresh. The way up in the beginning is good, the end is a bit rough. Up there, the weather is very good. Overlooking the river and mountains across the street. There are many hiking trails."

"Great hike in Abbotsford. The higher you drive up the rocky road, the easier the hike will be because you ascend less. We started at the main parking lot approximately 4km up. It was a very beautiful hike. Theres a lake in the middle called chadsey lake you can swim in. Then landscape changes a lot during the hike and there is never a dull moment. And obviously the view is phenomenal up there"

Hiking Sumas Mountain: Trails and Tips
Many visitors recommend driving as high as possible up the mountain road to reduce the hiking distance and elevation gain. However, this road can be rough, and AWD or 4x4 vehicles are often advised. If your vehicle has lower clearance, be prepared to park at lower points and walk the remainder of the way. Trail marking can be inconsistent, so carrying a map or using a GPS device is highly recommended to avoid getting lost.
When planning your hike, consider the time of year. Summer offers clearer views and drier trails, while spring might bring blooming wildflowers. Always inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time for safety. The park is a fantastic place for an active day out, offering a good workout and stunning natural beauty.
Navigating the Roads and Parking
Parking can be a significant consideration. While there are designated parking areas, they can fill up quickly, especially on busy days. Some visitors have noted that parking can be obstructed by poorly parked trucks. If you encounter limited parking, be prepared to park on the side of the road and walk the remaining distance to trailheads or viewpoints. This can add to your overall journey but still allows access to the park's attractions.
For those who wish to minimize the hiking effort, driving further up the mountain is a common strategy. This allows you to start your hike from a higher elevation, significantly reducing the amount of climbing required. However, always assess the road conditions and your vehicle's capabilities before proceeding too far up the mountain.
