What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the historic charm and scenic train journeys offered by Phnom Penh Railway Station, especially for its affordability. While the station's amenities are still developing, the authentic experience and beautiful landscapes make it a worthwhile stop for travelers seeking a unique way to see Cambodia. Some find the ticketing process and limited facilities a bit confusing.
"It's confusing to me how a cellphone giant can buy an entire railway station. There's just one tiny desk with two representatives of the railway at the exit. What about cafees, toilets/seating, timetables - why -? Why let greed win like this? Taking a train in Cambodia is great fun, and the tracks and trains are super, timely, clean- efficient. But to catch an early morning train and get to the tracks, you do actually have to WALK around the building's left side and wait outside on the platforms. The workers are diligent and put up signs letting you know which train is which. We were told to come one hour prior to departure- not necessary. And why is the only online ticket service run by a Malaysian company? Seats in the trains are quite uncomfortable - so I advise people to bring a pillow etc, but the scenery was stunning!"

"I really enjoyed the experience. This historic place reopened in 2016 and is still being developed, so it will probably get even better in the future. I loved how authentic it felt. For just $9 a person all the way to Kampot, it's absolutely worth it for the scenic views and the journey itself. The seats are first-come, first-served, but they're comfortable and have lots of legroom."

The Royal Railway Experience
Travelers often praise the affordability of the tickets, with journeys to places like Kampot costing around $9. The seating is generally described as comfortable with good legroom, though some reviews suggest bringing a pillow for longer trips due to seat firmness. The first-come, first-served seating policy means arriving a bit earlier can be beneficial, though not necessarily a full hour before departure as some might assume.
While the railway offers a charming and cost-effective way to see Cambodia, it's important to manage expectations regarding station amenities. The station itself is still undergoing development, meaning facilities like extensive restrooms, food stalls, and waiting areas are limited. However, a station cafe provides a pleasant spot for a coffee, and a Cellcard counter offers connectivity options.
Navigating Ticket Purchases and Station Logistics
Regarding arrival times, advice from fellow travelers suggests that the common recommendation to arrive a full hour before departure might be overly cautious. Many found that arriving closer to the departure time was sufficient, especially if they had already secured their tickets. This can be particularly helpful given the limited waiting facilities at the station. The station staff are noted for being diligent in guiding passengers to the correct platforms and trains.
For those looking to stay connected or purchase a local SIM card, the Cellcard counter within the station is a useful amenity. While the station is functional, it's important to remember its developing nature. Travelers seeking extensive services or a bustling station environment might find it basic, but for its purpose as a gateway to Cambodian provinces, it serves its role effectively.
