What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau to be a historically significant and deeply moving site, though some note a lack of on-site context. The daily bat exodus at sunset is a major highlight, offering a spectacular natural phenomenon. While the caves themselves are somber, the panoramic views and the sheer scale of the bat flight make it a worthwhile visit for many.
"We visited the Killing Cave, but honestly, it wasn’t as impactful as we expected. The place carries historical significance, but there isn’t much context or information provided on-site to help you fully understand the events. The cave itself is small, and aside from the memorial, there’s not much to see. Worth a quick stop if you’re in the area, but not a must-visit on its own."

"Thinking about how thousands of people died here gave me chills.
There isn’t much set up as a major attraction,
but since it’s on a hill, it’s a good place to walk around and take in the surroundings
before watching the bats.
I hired a motorbike driver at the bottom of the hill, which made getting around much easier.
I paid $3 for the ride.
If you don’t take a motorbike and walk up instead, it can take over an hour to look around."
Taehyun Ryu (Big Black Tree)
"A very insightful and harrowing visit if you’re in Battambang. The site is where a lot of innocent Cambodians lost their lives. The caves are cool to see but a bit chilling.
You can either walk up to the caves and the temples or we had a 2 way jeep ride for a total price of $10 dollars ( 3 people)."
