What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Marina Mindelo is the only full-service marina in Cape Verde, offering a crucial stop for sailors. While praised for its convenient location next to Mindelo town and a cozy tavern with delicious food, visitors frequently cite issues with slow Wi-Fi, inconsistent shower cleanliness, and the strong odor of desalinated water.
"Marina is in a nice location, staff sleeping during the night shift, wifi is slow to non existing, 2 out of 5 showers stopped working after 2 days already and toilets are very dirty in the morning as no staff is there before 8 and the floating jets are moving a lot, you need metal chocks not elastic ones"

"Of course, 5 stars, because this is the only marina on all the islands of Cape Verde :) Prices. We were in January and a day at this time about 40 euros. Water is inexpensive, but it stinks incredibly. Apparently bleach. To wash this smell off your hands and dishes is very difficult. Shower and toilet are in good condition. The tavern in the marina is very cozy. And delicious."

"I have diarrhoea and the marina won't let me use the toilet. Also this place is SWARMING with flies. 1000s of them, every bite of a sandwich and you risk some extra crunch. The owner of the boat I am on hasn't paid his mooring fee for the next week, he's away for a couple of days, so my access key card has been deactivated. The marina won't reactive it unless I pay €240 (not my boat, I just work here), So the cleanliness of my underwear is being held ransom for someone else's mooring fees. IN WHAT WORLD IS THIS ACCEPTABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE?! Someone give the lady on the desk a shake please.
Quite honestly the worst fly situation I've ever seen, more flies here than over roadkill, it's like they’ve decided we're already dead. 3 of our crew have had diarrhoea since arriving."

The Sole Marina in Cape Verde
While it serves a vital function, the marina's facilities have received mixed reviews. Travelers often highlight issues with the reliability and speed of the Wi-Fi, with the on-site floating bar being the only place offering a somewhat stable connection, albeit with a purchase requirement. Shower and toilet facilities are functional but can be basic and sometimes suffer from cleanliness issues, particularly during busy periods.
Despite these drawbacks, the marina's proximity to the vibrant city of Mindelo is a significant advantage. It allows visitors to easily access the rich cultural scene, music, and local life that Cape Verde is famous for. The on-site tavern is also a plus, offering a cozy atmosphere and delicious local food at reasonable prices.
Navigating Marina Mindelo's Facilities
The shower and toilet facilities are functional but basic. Some reviews mention a 'street style' setup with small doors, and cleanliness can be a concern, especially in the mornings. It's advisable to use these facilities during off-peak hours to potentially avoid crowds and ensure a more comfortable experience.
Water is available but comes with a caveat: it's desalinated and can have a strong, persistent odor that is difficult to remove. This is an additional cost, so factor it into your budget. Despite these challenges, the marina's location and the friendly atmosphere of the tavern contribute to its overall appeal for many sailors and travelers.
The Cultural Heartbeat of Mindelo
Visitors can immerse themselves in the local music scene, with many venues offering live performances of genres like morna and coladeira. The city's colorful architecture, bustling markets, and friendly locals create a captivating environment. Exploring Mindelo offers a stark contrast to the sometimes-challenging amenities of the marina, providing a rich and rewarding experience for those who venture out.
From the marina, it's easy to explore landmarks like the Praça Nova, the Mercado Municipal, and the iconic Torre de Belém replica. The city's artistic heritage is evident everywhere, from street art to the numerous cultural centers. Marina Mindelo, therefore, is not just a place to dock a boat, but a launchpad for experiencing the soul of Cape Verde.
