What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Sambadrome's electrifying atmosphere during Carnival, highlighting the spectacular samba parades with their vibrant floats and costumes. The organization and security are generally well-regarded, contributing to a safe and enjoyable experience. However, some visitors note issues with crowd management and signage, suggesting improvements for better navigation.
"Visiting the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí was a memorable highlight of my day trip in Rio de Janeiro! Even outside of Carnival season, this iconic venue radiates energy, history, and pride. Known as the heart of Rio’s world-famous samba parades, it was amazing to stand where so many unforgettable performances have taken place. We had a great time exploring the site and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. One of the best surprises was getting the chance to click some awesome pictures with a replica of the football trophy—a fun and unexpected photo-op that made the visit even more special! Just outside the stadium, we found several street vendors selling a wide variety of souvenirs. The prices were incredibly reasonable—definitely cheaper than most tourist spots in the city. We picked up a few colorful keepsakes and gifts to bring back home, all without breaking the bank.
The Sambadrome is more than just a parade ground—it's a cultural landmark that embodies the spirit of Rio. Whether you’re a fan of football, samba, or just Brazilian culture in general, this is a fantastic stop. I can only imagine how electrifying it must be during Carnival! Highly recommended for anyone exploring the soul of Rio de Janeiro."

"The Carnaval parade (10pm-2am, 4Mar25) was spectacular from our section G-91/92 seats. Superb performances by the sexy samba dancers followed by beautiful towering floats. Rio Cidade Service Tour shuttle from/to Pier Maua was good. Security and staff were all over the place and kept the very large crowd under control. Reasonable food and drink prices."

"Pretty good experience. Bathrooms were easy to find. Recommendation, have plenty of signs guiding people to their appropriate zone entrance. I had to ask police where to go with my translator app. Keep spectators out of the walk way. Literally had two tall guys stand in front of us on the stairs and staff watched and did nothing."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The Sambadrome is easily accessible by subway, with the Central station being a common drop-off point. From there, it's a short walk or a quick taxi/Uber ride. Many tours also offer shuttle services directly to the venue.
While Ubers and taxis are available, it's advisable to use official services or pre-booked transport due to high demand and potential surge pricing immediately after events. Be cautious of unofficial drivers.
Driving and parking can be challenging during Carnival due to road closures and limited availability. Public transport or organized shuttles are generally recommended.
Yes, there are designated entrances for various sectors and seating types (Arquibancada, Frisa, Camarote). Look for clear signage or ask security personnel to guide you to the correct entrance for your ticket.
Taking the subway from a station near Copacabana to Central station and then walking or taking a short taxi is a common and efficient method. Many tour operators also offer day trip packages including transport.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
It's highly recommended to purchase tickets several months in advance, especially for the main Carnival parade nights, as they sell out quickly. The 'Champions Parade' also requires advance booking.
Purchase tickets from official websites like Ticketmaster Brazil or through reputable tour operators. Be wary of unofficial resellers, as scams can occur.
Arquibancada (grandstands) offer a communal experience. Frisas (box seats) provide more private seating. Camarotes are VIP lounges with all-inclusive food and drinks.
While VIP options can be expensive, general grandstand tickets ('Arquibancada') are the most affordable. However, these also sell out the fastest. Consider the second division parades for potentially lower prices.
It's highly unlikely to find affordable or even available tickets on the day of the event, especially for the main Carnival parades. Advance purchase is crucial.
🎫 ✨ Onsite Experience
The atmosphere is electric and exhilarating! Expect a massive, joyous crowd, pulsating samba rhythms, and an unforgettable spectacle of color and energy.
Comfortable clothing and shoes are essential as you'll be doing a lot of standing and possibly walking. Light, breathable fabrics are best for the Rio heat. Many people wear festive attire.
Yes, there are numerous vendors selling food and drinks, including beer, soda, and snacks. Prices are generally reasonable, but VIP boxes often include open bars and buffets.
The Sambadrome has accessible areas and facilities, but it's advisable to check specific accessibility details when booking tickets or contact the venue in advance for arrangements.
Each samba school's parade lasts approximately 70-80 minutes, with breaks in between. The entire event for a night can run from late evening into the early morning hours.
📸 📸 Photography
The parade track itself offers incredible opportunities to capture the floats and dancers. Higher seating sections can provide a good overview of the entire spectacle.
Generally, smaller cameras and phones are allowed. However, professional camera equipment with large lenses might be restricted. It's best to check the specific rules for the event you're attending.
Outside of Carnival, you might find photo opportunities with replicas or historical displays. During Carnival, the sheer scale and vibrancy of the parades provide endless photographic moments.
The Sambadrome is well-lit for the parades, but it's still a night event. You may need to use higher ISO settings or a tripod if you're aiming for very sharp, detailed shots.
While it's a public event, it's always good practice to be respectful and avoid intrusive photography, especially of individuals in close proximity.
