What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers generally find Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport (GIG) to be a spacious, modern, and efficient hub with a vibrant atmosphere. Highlights include excellent amenities like free WiFi, charging stations, and a highly-rated VIP lounge. While the airport can be bustling, staff are often described as friendly and helpful, and dining options are surprisingly affordable and good.
"Spacious, Bustling, with a Hidden Oasis
My recent experience at this airport was overwhelmingly positive. The first thing you notice is the sheer size—it's massive and impressive. While it attracts huge crowds, the atmosphere is vibrant and energetic. The real highlight for me was the VIP lounge located post-security, right in front of gate B36. It's a truly great space to relax, recharge, and get away from the busy terminal.
Beyond the lounge, the airport is a shopper's paradise with a wide variety of stores to browse. Despite the number of people, the ample amenities and great facilities make it a top-tier travel hub. A truly excellent airport."

"GIG seemed safe, clean and custom processing was easy. There's lots of people to help. Customs officers are helpful and respectful.
However there's way too many people soliciting for taxi. Be weary.
Uber can be expensive from the airport. If you take BRT just outside terminal 1 and 2 to the next bus station and take a Uber from there it costs way cheaper.
It's possible to go all the way downtown and beyond by bus ( BRT). But you'll have to take at least 2 busses transfer. Check for BRT busses just outside T1 and T2. They'll cost a fraction of the Rideshare system. Public transportation seemed safe and efficient as well. And yes they are air-conditioned. Yay!"

"The airport is large and modern airport with all the facilities. You have even free water to refill your bottles. Free sockets to connect your phone charger with (Brazilian socket). There is a large duty free shop. Immigration is very quickly. Toilets are cleaned and well maintained. There are many currency exchange shops but be careful that the rates are very different from one to other. There is Uber service taxis and buses to different destinations including Buzios and other beach locations in nearby. You should be careful about some guys at the entrance which want to clean your shoes for free and then they ask for money and if you refuse to pay they start to shout and make many troubles."
