What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the stunning natural beauty of Nucleo Picinguaba, particularly the serene Praia da Fazenda and the impressive Cachoeira da Água Branca. The tranquility and pristine environment are major draws. However, concerns are raised about inconsistent road conditions, potential parking fees or unofficial charges, and the lack of amenities, requiring visitors to be well-prepared.
"It's a nice beach. But at times, there are people there that claim to be taking care of the parking who ask for money ("donations", aka protection money) ... who knows what will happen to your car if you don't pay? This is supposed to be a government-managed site and the fact that the São Paulo government cannot even manage this place without these thugs taking over is a travesty. Brazilians are taxed very highly and the government should at least have the decency to take some basic care of this place instead of letting it fall into privatization, like everything else in Brazil.
Everyone should have access to the ocean and basic wildlife, not just those who can pay!"

Exploring the Atlantic Forest
When exploring the Atlantic Forest here, remember that it's a sensitive ecosystem. Stick to marked trails to avoid disturbing the environment and its inhabitants. The air is often humid, and the ground can be uneven, so wearing appropriate footwear is crucial. Keep an eye out for diverse bird species, monkeys, and unique plant life that thrive in this protected habitat. The experience is truly an immersion into a vibrant, living ecosystem.
Many visitors find the trails challenging but rewarding. The sheer scale of the forest and the feeling of being deep within nature are often highlighted. It’s a chance to disconnect from the urban hustle and reconnect with the natural world, making it a core part of the Nucleo Picinguaba experience.
Praia da Fazenda: A Tranquil Escape
The waters here are typically gentle, especially when the sea is calm, making it suitable for families with children. Even when the sea is a bit more agitated, the gradual depth means you can walk quite a distance before the water gets deep, adding to its family-friendly appeal. The lack of commercial vendors also contributes to its serene atmosphere, so it's essential to come prepared with your own food, drinks, and beach gear.
Beyond relaxation, Praia da Fazenda is also a great spot for photography, with its beautiful coastline and the opportunity to walk towards the Rio da Fazenda. The drive to the beach itself, though sometimes rough, leads to a rewarding destination that feels worlds away from the usual tourist crowds. It’s a place where you can truly unwind and appreciate the raw beauty of the Brazilian coast.
Navigating the Roads and Access
Access to specific points of interest, like Praia da Fazenda, can sometimes involve navigating local roads that are also in varying states of repair. Some reviews mention that the roads are 'bastante esburacada' (quite potholed). It's advisable to drive cautiously and be prepared for a slower pace than you might be used to on paved highways. Using GPS and following directions to the Visitor Center of Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar - Núcleo Picinguaba is a good strategy for reaching the correct area.
Parking can also be a point of consideration. While some areas might offer free parking, there have been reports of unofficial 'donation' requests or even issues like tires being deflated if vehicles are parked in certain spots. This inconsistency in management means it's wise to be prepared for potential parking fees and to park responsibly. The challenging access, however, often contributes to the feeling of discovering a more secluded and pristine natural area.
