What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Pantanal for its incredible wildlife, especially the high chances of spotting jaguars in the North. The natural beauty and the unique wetland ecosystem are major draws. However, some travelers have experienced organizational issues with certain tour operators, leading to communication problems and last-minute plan changes.
"The Pantanal is amazing, the people are friendly and the accommodations were very good. Yet, we were a bit disappointed by the way things were organized by Pantanal Discovery. They are not joining, but arrange everything remotely. This is no problem if things are arranged well, but for us it felt like there was no clear schedule, plans often changed last minute and communication was chaotic. As a result we found ourselves constantly on the phone(whatsapp) instead of disconnecting and enjoying the beautiful nature and accommodations. They surely are friendly people and aim to be very helpful. We just expected more clarity and disconnection."

"I loved my tour to the Pantanal with Pantanal Discovery! I booked a tour to stay at both the Jungle Lodge and the Farm.
Both locations were great, and both have great food, great guides and provide unique experiences in the Pantanal. I’d really recommend staying at both because you see really different animals in each of the landscapes.
All the activities are really fun and we had great luck spotting animals along the way (thanks to the incredible eyes of the guides). We even saw a Jaguar!!
Thanks Gill, hopefully I’ll be back one day soon."

"I was aware of some of the 1* reviews, all left by profiles who have posted under 3 reviews, so probably fake accounts.
I can confirm I had a good tour booking through Gil, gave me clear choices and my option of staying in the Pantanal was value for money. Certainly much less expensive if touring from the north Cuiaba side.
I almost added his Bonito tour but unfortunately my travel schedule did not permit extra. Gil was very friendly, humourous, informative on a wide variety of Brazilian issues (even helped me pick the correct insect repellent and got ice for the bus trip), and I would recommend any lone or couple travellers using Pantanal Discovery."

Frequently Asked Questions
🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Most visitors fly into Cuiabá (CGB) for the Northern Pantanal or Campo Grande (CGR) for the Southern Pantanal. From there, you'll typically arrange transfers with your tour operator or lodge to reach your accommodation. Some tours might include transfers from Iguazu Falls to the Pantanal, but this is a long journey.
Visiting the Pantanal can be expensive, but some budget-friendly options exist, especially if you focus on the Southern Pantanal or look for package deals. Booking in advance and comparing tour operators is recommended.
The Northern Pantanal, especially around Porto Jofre, is renowned for its high density of jaguars. The Southern Pantanal offers a broader range of wildlife and landscapes but with fewer jaguar sightings.
While some areas are accessible by road, many lodges and prime wildlife viewing spots are best reached via organized tours or transfers, especially during the wet season when roads can become impassable.
Boat safaris along the rivers are the primary and most effective way to explore the Pantanal and spot wildlife. 4x4 vehicles are also used for land-based excursions.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
The Pantanal is a vast natural region, not a single ticketed park. Entry fees are typically included in your lodge or tour package, which covers access to private reserves or specific wildlife viewing areas.
Pantanal trips can be costly, with prices varying based on the duration, accommodation type, and the number of activities. Expect to pay more for jaguar-focused tours in the North.
While the Pantanal itself is a natural region, some protected areas or state parks within it may have nominal entrance fees, usually bundled into tour packages.
It's highly recommended to book your Pantanal tour and accommodation several months in advance, especially if you plan to visit during peak season or want to secure specific lodges or guides.
Packages usually include accommodation, meals, guided excursions (boat safaris, jeep tours), and transfers from a major city like Cuiabá or Campo Grande.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
The Pantanal is teeming with wildlife, including jaguars, capybaras, caimans, giant otters, anacondas, and hundreds of bird species like macaws and toucans.
The most popular activities include boat safaris for jaguar and caiman spotting, birdwatching tours, night safaris, and guided hikes to observe the diverse flora and fauna.
The Pantanal is generally safe for tourists, especially when traveling with reputable tour operators. Wildlife encounters are managed by experienced guides. Be aware of the risks associated with wildfires, particularly in drier months.
Pack light, breathable clothing, long sleeves and pants for sun and insect protection, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, swimwear, comfortable walking shoes, and a good camera with a zoom lens.
Use a telephoto lens for capturing distant animals, especially jaguars. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light. Be patient and listen to your guide's advice.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
Expect hearty, regional Brazilian cuisine. Dishes often feature local ingredients like river fish, beef, rice, beans, and tropical fruits. Many lodges offer buffet-style meals.
While traditional Pantanal cuisine is meat-heavy, most lodges can accommodate vegetarian or vegan diets if notified in advance. It's best to communicate your dietary needs when booking.
It is generally not recommended to drink tap water in the Pantanal. Bottled water is usually provided by lodges and tour operators, or you can purchase it.
Most lodges offer full board, meaning breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. Meals are often served in a communal dining area, fostering a social atmosphere.
Alcoholic beverages are typically not included in standard tour packages and must be purchased separately at the lodge or brought with you.
📸 📸 Photography
A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens (300mm or more) is ideal for wildlife. A wide-angle lens is useful for landscapes. Bring extra batteries and memory cards.
The 'golden hours' – early morning and late afternoon – offer the best natural light for photography, creating beautiful, soft illumination.
Yes, specialized photography tours are available, often led by experienced wildlife photographers who know the best locations and times for sightings.
Guides ensure safe distances are maintained for both your safety and the animals' well-being. Patience and a good zoom lens are key to getting close-up shots.
The main subjects are jaguars, caimans, giant otters, capybaras, and a vast array of bird species. The unique wetland landscapes also make for stunning scenic shots.

The Majestic Jaguar: A Pantanal Icon
Witnessing a jaguar in its natural habitat is a truly awe-inspiring experience. Guides are skilled at locating these predators, and boat safaris along the rivers offer the best vantage points. The interaction between jaguars and caiman is a particularly dramatic spectacle, showcasing the raw power of nature.
While the Northern Pantanal offers the best odds, it's important to manage expectations. Jaguar sightings are never guaranteed, but the Pantanal provides the highest probability in the world. Planning your trip during the dry season (May to October) significantly increases your chances, as animals congregate around dwindling water sources.
Navigating the Pantanal: Transportation and Tours
Boat safaris are the quintessential Pantanal experience. These excursions, typically conducted in small motorboats, allow you to navigate the intricate network of rivers and flooded plains, offering unparalleled opportunities to spot jaguars, caimans, giant otters, and a plethora of birdlife. Jeep or 4x4 tours are also common, providing access to different areas and habitats within the wetlands.
When choosing a tour operator, consider reviews and recommendations. Some travelers have reported issues with organization and communication with certain companies, while others have had highly positive experiences with guides who are knowledgeable and friendly. It's advisable to book well in advance, especially for popular jaguar-focused tours in the North.
Biodiversity Hotspot: Flora and Fauna
Mammals like the capybara, the world's largest rodent, are ubiquitous, often seen in large groups near water. Giant otters are a delight to observe, known for their playful antics. Reptiles are well-represented, with numerous caiman species basking on riverbanks and the impressive anaconda lurking in the waters.
The avian life in the Pantanal is simply spectacular. Over 650 bird species have been recorded, including vibrant macaws, the majestic jabiru stork, toucans, and countless other colorful and fascinating birds. Birdwatching is a major draw for many visitors, offering endless photographic opportunities.
