What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for Porto de Galinhas' natural pools are mixed, with many praising the pristine clear waters and unique marine life. However, some visitors express disappointment, citing aggressive vendors, feeling scammed, and overcrowded conditions. The experience is highly dependent on tide timing and managing vendor interactions.
"For me, this place is full of scammers because I'm probably disappointed with how Maragozi was, everyone was coming back. It's probably everywhere. They try to rip you off, starting from the parking lot. Someone calls you "park" and goes there. Turn this way, the wrong way. Take a boat at the end. Take a raft or a kayak. Swim 6 meters and tell them to dive to see the fish. Then they take you back. For me, this isn't an attraction that can be considered paid. You could just as easily grab a mask and go somewhere quiet. It's completely overrated and just a scam. I think there are more people, sunscreen, and everything else in the water than fish. So, it's just a guy with trained fish feeding them and saying he can take a photo, for an additional fee, of course. So, absolutely not. I don't recommend such places. I've been here at least in the main port and in Maragozi."

Yes, the natural pools are the main attraction and are easily accessible from the central part of Porto de Galinhas. Just head towards the beach, and you'll see signs and people organizing boat trips to the pools.
Most visitors arrive at Recife Airport (REC) and then take a transfer, taxi, or rental car to Porto de Galinhas, which is about an hour's drive away.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
There isn't a specific entry ticket for the natural pools themselves. However, you'll likely pay for a jangada (raft) boat trip to get to them, or for snorkeling equipment if you don't bring your own. Be prepared for vendor negotiations.
The natural pools are accessible only during low tide. It's crucial to check the daily tide charts for Porto de Galinhas to know when they will be visible and explorable. They are not open or closed at specific times like a traditional attraction.
The cost primarily involves the jangada boat ride, which can vary. Some reviews mention feeling pressured into paying for extras like photos with fish. It's advisable to agree on the price for the boat trip beforehand.
During very low tides, it might be possible to walk to some of the closer pools. However, most visitors opt for a jangada boat ride to reach the prime snorkeling spots and get a better view of the marine life.
🎫 🐠 Onsite Experience
The main activity is snorkeling and observing the diverse marine life in the clear, shallow waters. You can see various colorful fish swimming among the coral. Some tours offer opportunities for photos with trained fish.
It can get quite crowded, especially during peak season and on weekends. Visiting early in the morning or on weekdays can help you avoid the largest crowds and have a more enjoyable experience.
Wear comfortable swimwear and bring a towel. Water shoes are highly recommended to protect your feet from the coral and rocks. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat!
The water is generally clear and shallow enough that you can often see fish just by looking into the pools from the boat or the shore. However, snorkeling provides a much more immersive and detailed experience.
There are public restrooms and showers available near the main beach access points in Porto de Galinhas. It's advisable to use these before or after your visit to the pools.
📸 📸 Photography
A waterproof phone case or an action camera like a GoPro is ideal for capturing underwater shots. The clear water and vibrant fish make for stunning photos. Be mindful of other visitors and the environment when taking pictures.
Some boat operators offer photo packages where they feed fish to attract them for pictures. Be aware that this is an additional cost, and some visitors feel it's part of a tourist trap.
The natural pools themselves are the main photo opportunity. The surrounding beach and the jangada boats also make for picturesque shots, especially during sunrise or sunset.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When choosing a boat tour, look for jangadeiros who are experienced with children and can ensure a safe and fun ride. Some vendors might offer to take photos, which can be a fun souvenir, but always clarify the price beforehand to avoid surprises. If your children are very young, assess the tide level carefully; extremely low tides might expose more sharp coral, so slightly higher low tides could be safer.
💰 Budget Travelers
Be prepared to negotiate prices for boat tours if you decide to take one. Vendors often expect some haggling. Also, pack your own snacks and water, as purchasing them near the beach can be more expensive. Focus on the natural beauty of the pools and the fish you can see; the extra photo packages are often an unnecessary expense for budget-conscious travelers.

Understanding the Tides: Your Key to the Pools
To maximize your experience, aim for the lowest point of the tide, often referred to as 'maré baixa de sizígia' or spring tide, which occurs around the new and full moon phases. These periods offer the most extensive and shallow pools. While any low tide is better than high tide, these specific times are when the pools are at their most impressive. Planning your visit around these natural cycles is the single most crucial step for an unforgettable trip to the natural pools.
Navigating Vendor Interactions
One common practice is offering a boat ride to the pools and then suggesting a photo with trained fish for an extra fee. If you're interested in this, clarify the cost upfront. Alternatively, if you prefer a more independent experience, consider bringing your own snorkeling gear and exploring the accessible parts of the pools during low tide. This allows you to set your own pace and avoid potential upselling. Remember, the goal is to enjoy the natural beauty, so a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a positive experience.
