The free admission and the availability of an English booklet are highlighted as significant advantages, making it a pleasant and enriching cultural stop. Some visitors note that exhibits are primarily in Portuguese, but the provided booklet mitigates this.
"Very interesting museum on the history of candy making and fruit canning in the area. Everything is in Portuguese, however, they have a booklet in English that they can lend you as you go through. The booklet is well written and contains some fascinating stories. Finding this was a pleasant surprise. The building itself is also very beautiful, especially the ceilings. In the back corner there is also an old kitchen where the walls are covered with gorgeous blue ceramic tiles. Well worth stopping in here if you are in Pelotas."

The Sweet Heart of Pelotas: A Legacy of Confectionery
Visitors can expect to encounter a fascinating array of historical artifacts, recipes, and narratives that illuminate the journey of these culinary arts. The museum's collection highlights the dedication of generations of 'doceiras' (female confectioners) and 'doceiros' (male confectioners) who have kept these traditions alive. Exhibitions often focus on specific aspects, such as the 'Cooperativa das Doceiras' or the 'Cadernos de Receitas' (recipe books), offering a glimpse into the organized efforts and personal touch involved in preserving this heritage.
Beyond the exhibits, the museum itself is a historical treasure. Housed in a beautifully preserved old building, its architecture, including grand ceilings and a charming old kitchen with blue ceramic tiles, adds another layer to the visitor experience. This blend of historical content and architectural beauty makes the Museu do Doce UFPel a unique and engaging destination for anyone interested in Brazilian culture and culinary history.
Experiencing the Museu do Doce: Beyond the Exhibits
The museum frequently hosts events like 'rodas de conversa' (conversation circles) and film screenings, often in collaboration with other university departments or local organizations. These events can offer unique perspectives, such as exploring the history of Black confectioners or enjoying a film in a unique setting. The 'Sala das Pretas' (Room of Black Women) initiative, for instance, highlights the often-overlooked contributions of Black women to the sweet-making tradition.
Furthermore, the museum's role extends to being a space for academic and artistic expression. Collaborations with university groups, like the PET Conservação e Restauro, showcase how heritage preservation and artistic endeavors intertwine. The presence of the Iphan (Instituto de Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional) office within the museum also underscores its importance in safeguarding cultural heritage. This multifaceted approach ensures that the Museu do Doce UFPel remains a vibrant and dynamic cultural center.
