Reviews Summary

Mercado Adolpho Lisboa is a historically significant market with impressive architecture and a vibrant display of Amazonian produce, especially its famous fish market. While it offers a glimpse into local life and a chance to buy souvenirs, visitors note that prices can be high for tourists and handicrafts may be better found elsewhere. Some find the market a bit dirty with strong odors.

"A market for tourists, but you can still spot interesting souvenirs. Anyway, all the area around is full of real shps, around 5 blocks extension"

Giulio Toscani

"This is basically a veeeery big souvenir shop. So if you need magnets, soaps, Cachaça or anything else to bring home, that’s the place to go to in Manaus!"

Flo

"A place worth visiting if you are curious about the history of Manaus and the buildings from the late 19th century. It consists of 2 different facades - a different one from the city and another from the river side and I would give it 5.

Unfortunately, in terms of commerce, no higher than 3. There are a lot of shops with souvenirs and allegedly handicrafts - unfortunately souvenirs and jewelry are mostly repeated and prices are high under tourists. Though you are able to find a seller with fair prices. Fridge magnets are cheap. And I saw handicrafts from maybe 2 shops. If anything more, they were closed.

In theory, the market is open until 5 pm, in practice, just after 4 pm, the shops start to close.

To be honest I've found much more cheaper souvenirs in other markets, and more beauty handcraft during 'amazon tours'.

A bit dirty and not a pleasant smell (and I doubt the smell is coming from the part that sells fresh fish and meat)."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into Manaus's Past

Mercado Adolpho Lisboa is more than just a marketplace; it's a historical landmark. Built in the late 19th century during Manaus's rubber boom era, its architecture is a testament to that prosperous period. The market features two distinct facades: one facing the city and another, more ornate, facing the Rio Negro. This dual design reflects its importance as a hub for both local commerce and river trade. Visiting the market offers a tangible connection to Manaus's rich history and its architectural heritage. Reddit

Walking through the market, you can almost feel the echoes of the past. The ironwork and the grand scale of the building speak to the wealth and ambition of Manaus at the turn of the 20th century. It's a place where history is not just read about, but experienced through its enduring structures and the continued vibrancy of its commerce. Reddit

The Heart of Amazonian Cuisine

While the fish are displayed on counters, large Styrofoam ice chests behind the scenes ensure their freshness. This section is a sensory experience, offering a true taste of the Amazon's bounty.
