"Ruínas do colégio jesuíticos / Capela de São Benedito, terceira igreja mais antiga do Brasil, localizada na primeira praça da cidade alta foi o campo onde os jesuítas reinstalaram, em 1622, portas da madeira de pau-brasil.
Colégio jesuítico 1549 e terminado a construção em 1552, funcionou apenas por seis anos para catequizar os índigenas. Em 1558 os portugueses destruíram o colégio para tirar o madeiramento do telhado para construírem uma serraria para transportar o pau-brasil para Portugal, a extração da árvore tinta vermelha para tecido. A serraria funcionou por quatro anos, até que os indígenas destruíram a serraria.
Foi utilizada como moradia por um professor de latim até 1820. Abandonado o colégio resistiu até 1917, quando retiraram seus materiais para construção de outro edifício na cidade baixa. E a Capela de São Benedito foi erguida sobre as ruínas do antigo colégio jesuítico.
A capela está isolada num dos lados da praça relvada, aberta para a falésia."
