Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the Sarajevo Bobsleigh Track's unique blend of Olympic history, striking street art, and serene natural beauty. The atmospheric abandoned structure on Trebević Mountain offers a powerful sense of exploration and a peaceful escape. While the journey and the track's condition require some caution, the overall experience is described as unforgettable and highly recommended.

"Visiting Bob Staza Trebević was like stepping into another world. Hidden in the forest above Sarajevo, this abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics bobsled track is now a powerful mix of sport history, nature reclaiming its space, and some truly stunning street art.

Walking along the track, you can really feel the contrast between past and present. Built for the Olympics during Yugoslavia's time, it was once full of energy, cheering crowds, and world-class athletes. Today, it’s quiet—but in a powerful way. Every curve and tunnel is now covered in vibrant graffiti, turning the concrete into a massive open-air gallery.

What makes this spot even better is the short, scenic hike to reach it from the cable car station or nearby trails. It’s peaceful, shaded, and gives you plenty of photo opportunities."

"Extremely atmospheric and extraordinary place to visit. Located on the mountain, the remains of Olympic Games bobsleigh track still fascinate a lot of people, so it does me! The whole track now is surrounded by endless forest, blue sky and fantastic air. There were not many people on the top, at the ropeway, when I went a little farther, there was completely none. I was feeling myself like being on alienated ground, where only nature and me still remain. I absolutely recommend anyone to visit this place, you will remember it forever"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

History of the Bobsled Track

The Sarajevo Bobsleigh and Luge Track was constructed for the 1984 Winter Olympics, a significant event for Yugoslavia. It was a state-of-the-art facility, hosting thrilling competitions and showcasing Sarajevo on the international stage. The track's design featured 20 turns and a length of 1,300 meters, built into the slopes of Trebević Mountain.

However, its Olympic glory was short-lived. During the Bosnian War in the early 1990s, the track suffered significant damage and fell into disuse. It became a battleground and was heavily shelled, leaving it in its current state of abandonment. The concrete structure, once a symbol of athletic achievement, transformed into a stark reminder of conflict and the passage of time.

Today, the track is a unique historical site, reclaimed by nature and transformed by urban art. It stands as a powerful testament to both past triumphs and the resilience of the city, offering visitors a profound glimpse into Sarajevo's complex history. The contrast between its Olympic past and its current artistic and natural state is striking and deeply moving. Reddit

The Art of Abandonment: Graffiti on the Track

One of the most captivating aspects of the Sarajevo Bobsleigh Track is the vibrant street art that now adorns its concrete surfaces. What was once a symbol of athletic prowess has become a massive, open-air canvas for local and international artists. The graffiti ranges from intricate murals to bold tags, transforming the decaying structure into a dynamic art installation.

This artistic intervention adds a layer of contemporary culture to the historical site. The art often reflects themes of resilience, memory, and the urban landscape of Sarajevo. Walking along the track, visitors are treated to a constantly evolving gallery, with new pieces appearing and older ones fading, creating a unique visual experience with every visit. Reddit

The contrast between the stark, weathered concrete and the explosion of color from the graffiti is visually stunning. It’s a powerful juxtaposition that speaks to the city’s ability to find beauty and expression even in abandoned spaces. The art invites interaction, with visitors often posing with the murals and exploring the hidden corners of the track to discover new creations. Reddit

Exploring Trebević Mountain: Beyond the Track

Trebević Mountain offers more than just the bobsled track. It's a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts, with numerous hiking trails winding through dense forests and offering breathtaking panoramic views of Sarajevo. The clean mountain air and cooler temperatures make it an ideal escape from the summer heat.

Visitors can discover secluded picnic spots, perfect for a relaxing afternoon surrounded by nature. The mountain is also home to other remnants of its past, including abandoned military structures and viewpoints that offer historical context. The journey up via the cable car itself is an experience, providing stunning vistas as you ascend.

Whether you're interested in history, art, hiking, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature, Trebević Mountain provides a rich and rewarding experience. It’s a place where the past, present, and natural beauty converge, offering a unique perspective on Sarajevo. Reddit
