Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the breathtaking, expansive views of the Andes and the unique experience of visiting the former highest ski resort. The drive up is often described as thrilling but potentially dangerous. Some appreciate the historical aspect and the poignant reminder of climate change, while others highlight the extreme cold and the need for acclimatization.

"Wow, what an incredible place. Beautiful uninterrupted views of Huayna Potosi, can see Illimani and Murarata, the Cordillera Real, Sajama, Parinacota and Lake Titicaca!! The best part is you can get almost to the summit by car! There’s a Refugio here, and if you like you can walk the remainder of the way (about 800m distance with 150m elevation gain) to the summit - 5421m above sea level. The views here are the best, but even at the level of the Refugio, where the car can reach, the vistas are incredible. Many tour companies offer this as a tour coupled with a visit to Valle de la Luna, but you can also walk from here down to Huayna Potosi base camp. This is an amazing hike where the first 30-60mins is along a ridge with almost 360degrees of views, and then as you start to descend you have continuous views of Huayna Potosi!!! Most of this has no clear marked path, but because it’s quite open it’s not too hard to have a general sense of direction (although best to also have a GPS based navigation app, or a guide). Some sections of scrambling, and some parts of crossing scree slopes.
The whole time (including at the Refugio parking spot) we had the whole place to ourselves! Overall this is an excellent and relatively easily accessible acclimatising trip/hike, although it’s incredible in and of itself!!"

The Impact of Climate Change on Chacaltaya
