What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Chagri Dorjeden Monastery as a hidden gem, highlighting its historical significance as Bhutan's first monastery and the rewarding, less-crowded hike. Many appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and stunning valley views, offering a peaceful spiritual experience.
"I visited this monastery by accident, and I'm glad I did. As part of my tour I was supposed to go to the nearby Tango Monastery. But my driver accidentally missed the turn, and continued to drive as he looked for a place to turn around. My guide told me what had happened, but also mentioned that there was another monastery a little further up the road that we could see instead. I asked him which one he would recommend, and he said that he thought Chagri Dorjeden was better for a few reasons. So we went there instead.
I didn't get the chance to visit Tango Monastery in the end, but based on the pictures I saw and what my guide described to me, I'm glad I came here instead. The hike to this monastery is a nice hike through nature. Sure, it's uphill, but it's uphill on well-maintained paths through nature. By contrast, my guide said Tango Monastery was more steps and paved paths and less of a hiking trail. Although the pictures of Tango Monastery also look nice, I will say that I thought this monastery was beautiful. Perched on the side of the cliff, it was impressive to look at.
Finally, unlike Tango Monastery which had quite a few cars in the parking lot when we eventually drove by so I could check it out from below, there was only one other car in the parking lot at Chagri Dorjeden Monastery when we arrived. We had the whole hiking trail to ourselves, and only saw the person from that other vehicle for a few minutes at the monastery before they hiked back down the mountain. The total lack of tourists made for a really relaxing and enjoyable visit.
This place was a true hidden gem in the Thimphu area. I'd highly recommend paying it a visit."

"A wide and clean path up the hill to the nice temple. Evaluate 1.75km to go up with 250m of elevation (about 45m/1h). You get a great view of the town."

"Climbing up to 2830 m above sea level, this hike gives some amazing views of the northern Thimphu valley. The temple and its locale provide great stories and Buddhism history with caves where prayers had taken place as well as the development of praise you form due to its location and wonder how the whole temple was built."
