What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Namur Cable Car for its spectacular panoramic views of the city and river confluence, calling it a convenient and scenic way to reach the Citadel. While the ride is enjoyable, some suggest opting for a single ticket to allow for more flexible exploration of the Citadel grounds and a potentially easier descent.
"A nice way to get up and down the citadel. The gondola actually goes all the way up to Le Pavillon, past the Terra Nova Museum. You can get single or return tickets. A return is absolutely necessary if you're okay with walking down or you just want to visit Terra Nova. From Terra Nova Museum, it's quicker just to walk back down than to walk back up for the return trip.
All in all, a nice comfortable ride and the views are awesome."

"We happened to visit the yellow duck festival and enjoyed the vibe and shows. The traditional music is especially fantastic and played by traditional instruments and local people who are really professional on this. A real heritage!!
The only downside is the availability of public toilets. I wonder how people did but the open beer bar was obviously equipped with no WC. I ended up riding the cable car up to the castle to find one. A real shame."

"Great views but would not recommend a return ticket on the cable car. It arrives at the top of the fortress with other sights further down therefore you need to walk all the way back and it’s steep instead of just walking a little bit further and you are done. Restaurant at the top is lovely and great view. No wifi. Restaurant halfway is self serve with limited assortment but there are toilets and outdoor area to sit."

The Namur Cable Car Experience
Many travelers highlight the cable car as a must-do for its unique perspective. It's often described as a 'quickest and coolest way' to reach the Citadel, offering stunning vistas that are hard to appreciate from ground level. The ride is particularly enjoyable for families, with children sometimes referring to it as a 'carousel.' While the views are consistently praised, some photographers note that the cable car ride itself can be challenging for capturing perfect shots due to reflections and movement, suggesting the Citadel itself offers better photographic opportunities.
When planning your visit, consider the practicalities of ticketing. While return tickets are available, many reviews suggest that purchasing a single ticket might be more advantageous. This is because the cable car arrives at the upper part of the Citadel, and exploring further down may lead you to a point where walking back up to the cable car station is less convenient than simply walking down to the city. This advice helps visitors optimize their time and energy while exploring the extensive Citadel grounds.
Exploring the Citadel of Namur
Visitors often spend several hours exploring the Citadel, walking along its ramparts, and discovering its hidden corners. The views from the top are consistently lauded, providing a sweeping panorama of Namur and the surrounding Walloon landscape. There are also amenities available, such as a restaurant at the top offering great views and a self-serve option halfway up, which also provides toilets and outdoor seating. The accessibility of the Citadel, combined with the ease of reaching it via the cable car, makes it a highly recommended stop for anyone visiting Namur.
When planning your visit to the Citadel, it's worth noting the practical advice from fellow travelers. As mentioned, consider the cable car ticket strategy: a single ticket might be more practical if you intend to explore extensively and walk down. Also, be aware of the availability of public toilets, which can sometimes be limited within the Citadel grounds, though facilities are available at the restaurants. The Citadel offers a rich historical experience and is a key reason why many visitors are drawn to Namur.
