What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Saint-Nicolas-en-Havré Church to be a beautiful and touching place, particularly appreciating its exceptional 18th-century woodwork and the detailed sculptures in the Chapel of St. Joseph. While the interior architecture is classical, the Baroque influences in the chapels and the ornate decoration are consistently praised. It's considered a worthwhile visit for those with time to explore its artistic treasures.
"The Church of Saint Nicholas is a 13th century church close to the Grand Place of Mons. The exterior is much younger than the interior due to restorations and rebuilding works over the centuries. The exterior is very much Baroque, while the interior is Romanesque. Although the interior is clearly classical in design, the chapels show clear Baroque influences, especially on the rich and ornate woodwork. The high altar is undoubtedly the masterpiece of the church, although I preferred the Chapel of St. Joseph for the beautiful sculptures shows off the translucence of alabaster with a flourish as well as the sculpture of an angel with infant Jesus.
Not a must-see in Mons, but worthwhile time permitting."

Architectural Journey: From Romanesque Roots to Baroque Flourishes
Step inside, and you'll find the interior architecture is classical in design, yet the chapels are where the Baroque influence truly shines. This is most evident in the rich and ornate woodwork that adorns these spaces, a detail that many visitors find particularly captivating. The careful restoration has preserved these elements, allowing them to be admired for their quality and consistency.
Key terms to note are Romanesque for the older structural elements and Baroque for the more decorative, later additions. The interplay between these styles creates a distinct atmosphere, making the church a noteworthy example of historical preservation and artistic adaptation.
Artistic Treasures: Woodwork and Sculptures
Beyond the woodwork, the Chapel of St. Joseph is particularly renowned for its beautiful sculptures. These pieces, often executed in alabaster, showcase the translucence of the material with a remarkable flourish. The sculpture of an angel with the infant Jesus is frequently highlighted as a particularly moving and skillfully executed work.
When visiting, dedicate time to truly observe these artistic details. The combination of the grand high altar and the more intimate chapel works offers a comprehensive appreciation of the church's artistic heritage.
